A Special Education Online Resource Teacher provides individualized support and instruction to students with diverse learning needs in a virtual environment. They collaborate with general education teachers, families, and support staff to develop and implement personalized education plans (IEPs), ensuring that accommodations and modifications are integrated into online learning platforms. These educators use digital tools and strategies to engage students, monitor progress, and foster academic and social-emotional growth. The role promotes equity and access, helping students overcome barriers to learning while building confidence and independence.

Summary Description

Under the general supervision of an administrator, a special education teacher will be assigned a caseload and will implement school board policy regarding the educational curriculum of a particular instructional division and/or instructional unit.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Planning and Preparation: Administer district curriculum aligned with Common Core State Standards and consistent with IEP instructions as needed.
  • Design and implement effective lessons and student assessments aligned with Common Core State Standards.
  • Design coherent, differentiated instruction and assessments aligned with standards at the appropriate instructional level.
  • Provide instructions, modifications, adaptations, and implement IEPs in an organized and meaningful manner.
  • Analyze student progress and ensure assessment regulations and guidelines are followed.
  • Demonstrate mastery of content, pedagogy, knowledge of students and resources, and characteristics of students with disabilities.
  • Set instructional outcomes for diverse learners and create a respectful, positive learning environment.
  • Maintain a positive, orderly, safe, accessible, and academically focused learning environment and manage classroom procedures and student behavior.
  • Demonstrate cultural competency.
  • Instruction: Communicate learning expectations; engage students; use discussion and questioning techniques; embed assessment in instruction; demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness; familiarity with MTSS; apply strategies and accommodations to help students access the curriculum; coordinate with other service staff for student instruction.
  • Professional Responsibilities: Maintain accurate records and IEPs within timelines; demonstrate professionalism, integrity and ethical conduct; collaborate with administrators, staff and community; promote parent participation in the IEP process; reflect on teaching; participate in a professional learning community; contribute to job-related duties and team objectives; participate in evaluating individual objectives for assigned students.

Special Education teachers may be assigned as Resource Special Education teachers or to specific specialized programs within the Special Education umbrella. Where assigned to a specialized program, the described duties apply along with program-specific information.

Employment Standards

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree with student teaching experience and ability to obtain a Nevada teaching license. Knowledge of child development, behavior, and subject area; effective teaching skills; planning and organizing; supervision and control; assessment and diagnosis; interpersonal relations. Skills in creating a productive learning environment, building relationships with staff, utilizing technology for instruction and data-based decision making. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Nevada teaching license in the relevant subject area and/or grade level. Note: Department chair role may include additional pay.
