Special Education Nurse
Special Education Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to students with special health care needs from routine to complex. The role supports students’ access to education by managing medical conditions, implementing individualized health plans, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. This district-wide position is based on need, currently at Cascade Elementary School.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care to students with complex medical needs, such as mobility, toileting, positioning, feeding tubes, tracheostomies, and seizure disorders.
- Implement and monitor Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
- Develop and implement a student health plan in collaboration with the school nurse.
- Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and district policies.
- Monitor student health status and respond to medical emergencies.
- Be flexible in working extended days to accommodate student transportation needs, when required.
- Accurately complete and submit Medicaid forms and related documents.
- Collaborate with general and special education teachers in providing student accommodations or modifications per IEP.
- Other duties assigned by the district.
Collaboration & Case Management
- Participate in IEP meetings and collaborate with the IEP team in the development and implementation of the IEP.
- Collaborate with the school nurse, teachers, therapists, administrators, and families.
- Communicate appropriately, collaboratively, and effectively with parents, administrators, other school personnel, and health care providers.
- Maintain accurate and confidential health records in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA.
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Iowa.
- Certified in BLS (or obtain within the first six months).
- Mandatory reporter.
- Knowledge of special health care needs of children.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
