Job summary

Brookings School District 5-1 is seeking a Special Education Instructional Assistant – Level 2 to support students with IEPs in an educational setting. The role is full-time with benefits, including partial health and dental insurance coverage and other retirement and leave provisions.

Responsibilities include implementing behavior plans, de-escalation support, and assisting instructional delivery while maintaining data on progress and reports for the case manager.

Qualifications

  • Must have completed two years post high school education.
  • Pass all employment screenings.
  • Ability and desire to work with children in need of special education who present challenging behaviors.
  • Experience working with children with special needs and behavior disorders preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support students in implementing IEPs and behavior plans.
  • Assist in applying de-escalation strategies.
  • Model and teach specialized strategies and techniques (social stories, peer facilitation).
  • Contribute to the development and revision of student behavior programs and IEPs.
  • Collect and maintain data on behavior and achievement goals.
  • Prepare and adapt instructional materials and behavior plans to enhance student performance.

TITLE: Instructional Assistant Level 2

Qualifications
  • Two years post high school education
  • Pass all employment screenings

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education

Primary Function

To support implementation of students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs); assist in developing and implementing a behavior plan as described in the IEP; assist in the instructional program in an educational setting.

Physical Requirements

Requires hearing, hand-eye coordination, mind-eye coordination; ability to carry 30-40 pounds; frequent lifting, sitting, stooping, standing, and bending; frequent keyboarding and repetitive motion with wrists, hands and fingers; occasional physical management of students.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Support students in alternative and classroom settings to control behavior.
  • Assist in implementing de-escalation strategies.
  • Model and teach specialized strategies and techniques (social stories, peer facilitation, peer training, etc.).
  • Participates in the implementation and revision of student behavior programs and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Collect and maintain data on behavior and achievement goals.
  • Assist in preparation and adaptation of instructional materials and behavior plans to enhance student performance.
  • Help establish and maintain home-school communication, including progress reports and other reports determined by case manager.
  • Provide individual or small group instruction and support to students.
  • Administer tests, correct papers, and record grades; prepare instructional materials.
  • Supervises student activities, when needed.
  • Participates in behavior management training as requested by the District.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors.
