Job Title: Special Education Facilitator Transition Specialist - Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) Reports To: Director of Special Education Classification: Professional Wage/Hour Status: Exempt Days: 188 Salary: See Compensation Plan for New Hire Guide for Teachers Contract: Probationary/Term Date Revised: 11/15/2023 Primary Purpose: Provide technical support to high school campuses on transition services for special education students in the development of appropriate, measurable postsecondary goals and the coordinated set of activities to facilitate movement from school to post-school activities. Qualifications/Skills: Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field. Master's degree in related field preferred.
  • Valid Texas Teacher Certificate or Teaching Certificate from out of state appropriate for position. Special Education certification.
  • Certification must meet requirements for becoming and remaining qualified for this position in a manner required by Federal and/or State law.

  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Adheres to deadlines.

Experience

  • Three (3) years teaching experience in secondary programs for students with disabilities preferred.

Major Duties and

Responsibilities:
Instructional Strategies:

  • Be proficient with federal and state transition rules and regulations, acting as the campus contact for transition.
  • Become knowledgeable about state agencies that offer transition supports and services.
  • Become knowledgeable about Department of Labor regulations concerning community-based vocational education, supported employment and competitive employment.
  • Conduct student age-appropriate transition assessments and parent interviews regarding post-secondary goals for all special education students.
  • Develop measurable postsecondary goals for special education students in the areas of training/education, employment, and where appropriate, independent living skills.
  • Develop transition services that will reasonably enable the student to meet his or her postsecondary goals.
  • Provide staff development to staff, students, and parents on the transition process and services.
  • Attend ARD meetings as necessary.

Classroom Management and Organization:

  • Maintain student files on transition and assist in preparing required documentation for monitoring.

Communication:

  • Establish and maintain contact with various community agencies and postsecondary institutions in order to assist students in transitioning from public school to post-graduation environments.
  • Attend staff development regarding the transition process (state and federal updates).
  • Provide student information to agencies involved in the transition process.
  • Collaborate with middle and high school counselors on students’ four year plans and their career pathways to develop the course of study.
  • Collaborate with the Career and Technology (CTE) Department regarding course requirements and vocational experiences.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Professional Growth and Development:

  • Participate in staff development to improve job-related skills.
  • Keep informed of and comply with federal, state and district regulations and policies.

Other Duties:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • This position requires regular in-person interaction with the public.
