Job summary

Job description

The Special Education Coordinator is responsible for special education and related services in assigned schools and/or programs. The incumbent will implement systems of leadership, support, and guidance for school and district personnel so that educational programs for Students with Disabilities (SWD) are implemented in compliance with the IDEA and related federal and state laws, rules and regulations.

Job Requirements
  • Provide Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) to SWD as documented on the IEP.
  • Support SWD to access the state-approved general curriculum and to the maximum extent appropriate, be educated with their non-disabled peers in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).
  • Develop IEPs and 504s including initials, annual reviews and re-evaluations.
  • Develop a case management system to monitor service provisions for IEPs/504s compliance.
  • Manage scheduling of SWD to maximize student performance and to ensure IEP goals are managed and implemented.
  • Review, monitor and meet timelines for IEPs, referrals, initial eligibilities, and re-evaluations.
  • Assign and/or conduct staff meetings to develop IEPs; attend all appropriate IEP meetings (i.e. Amendments, Eligibility Redetermination, Initial Eligibility meetings.)
  • Analyze formal and informal assessment results to develop IEPs/504s and monitor goals’ progress.
  • Provide ongoing training, guidance, support and monitoring for school personnel to assist in implementing special education/504s, accommodations, modifications, and related services in compliance with the IDEA and related federal and state laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Implement systems of training, support and monitoring to ensure that SWD are included appropriately in state-mandated assessments.
  • Monitor consistent implementation of accommodations for all students with IEPs /504s in general education settings.
  • Develop and assist with appropriate behavior management strategies for SWD.
  • Provide technical guidance and support for SST’s effective use of behavioral support tools (Functional Behavior Assessment, Positive Behavioral Supports, and Behavior Intervention Plans).
  • Assist with disciplinary process for SWDs, including oversight of manifestation determination hearings.
  • Manage relationships with outside vendors to ensure students receive all individually prescribed IEP services (i.e. Assessments, Occupational Therapy, Language and Speech, etc.)
  • Monitor that SWD are provided related services by appropriately trained, credentialed, and effective therapists/clinicians.
  • Collaborate with appropriate school-based personnel to assure accurate documentation and timely data input/submission for students with disabilities.
  • Timely and accurate preparation and submission of state/federal special education reports.
  • Serve a special education liaison to state of Georgia, including attendance at state meetings and submission of required reports.
  • Build strong partnerships with parents, school leaders, instructional personnel, and district personnel in order to build support for SWD
  • Maintain current certification in the areas of special education.
  • Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development activities, curriculum development meetings, and other professional opportunities.
  • Maintain current knowledge on evidence-based strategies and best practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by appropriate administrator.
