Position Overview

College Achieve Public Schools is seeking a qualified and experienced Special Education Coordinator to oversee and enhance the district’s special education programs and services. The ideal candidate is a strong advocate for extraordinary learners, ensures compliance with all state and federal regulations, and collaborates with the Child Study Team, administrators, teachers, and families to deliver an inclusive and high-quality education. This position combines leadership, supervision, and direct instruction to meet the needs of classified students and support staff performance.

Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Supervision

  • Oversee and implement special education programs and services in alignment with NJ Code and IDEA regulations
  • Collaborate with building principals and the Executive Director to ensure effective program delivery
  • Supervise special education teachers, CST members, speech therapists, home instructors, and aides
  • Ensure compliance with all federal and state special education requirements and timelines
  • Monitor and review weekly lesson plans, curriculum implementation, SGOs, and assessment data
  • Coordinate department meetings, PLCs, and serve as a resource for teachers and families
  • Complete monthly reports, maintain program records, and submit required state/federal documentation

Staff Development & Evaluation

  • Teach a minimum of two and no more than three classes
  • Conduct classroom observations and professional development plans (PDPs) for special education staff
  • Provide annual written evaluations in compliance with state law
  • Assist in the recruitment, selection, retention, and discipline of special education personnel
  • Plan and lead professional development sessions and in-service training

Compliance & Reporting

  • Maintain current knowledge of special education law and policy
  • Manage timelines and submissions for all DOE-required reports, final applications, amendments, and counts
  • Represent the district at county and state special education meetings
  • Coordinate diagnostic and achievement testing programs across the department
  • Develop and manage the department budget in collaboration with the Executive Director and Business Administrator
  • Liaise with local health and service agencies and support parent communication regarding instructional or placement concerns

Required Qualifications

  • Valid New Jersey Supervisor and/or Administrative Certificate
  • Valid New Jersey LDTC Certificate preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NJ special education code and IDEA regulations
  • Several years of successful experience teaching special education or working on a Child Study Team
  • Proven experience in supervision, administration, or coordination of special education services preferred
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to assess learning characteristics and plan instructional strategies effectively
  • Must pass a criminal history background check and meet all state employment requirements
