Position Overview

The Special Education Compliance Coordinator will support compliance, programming, and staff supervision within our Special Education department, ensuring adherence to IDEA and FAPE guidelines. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to students with exceptionalities in an alternative school setting. Effective communication with families, advocates, and legal representatives is essential to maintain student-centered and legally compliant practices.

Responsibilities
  1. Leadership & Oversight:
    • Supervise and coach 10–15 aides, ensuring clarity of roles and consistent IEP support implementation.
    • Manage aide coverage based on IEP mandates and student needs.
    • Coordinate with instructional teams and service providers to support students.
  2. Compliance & Program Monitoring:
    • Track IEP timelines, reevaluations, and service data to ensure compliance with IDEA, OSSE, and DC regulations.
    • Maintain systems for progress monitoring and data collection.
    • Oversee IEP and BIP implementation fidelity across staff.
  3. Communication & Advocacy:
    • Engage with families, guardians, advocates, and legal reps professionally and compassionately.
    • Lead IEP meetings, MDTs, and manifestation determinations with proper documentation.
    • Support families in understanding their rights and foster an inclusive environment.
  4. Documentation & Writing:
    • Draft legal notices, meeting summaries, and formal letters accurately.
    • Maintain records for audits and quality reviews.
    • Meet deadlines for reports and data submissions.
  5. School Culture & Team Collaboration:
    • Collaborate across departments to support students with exceptional needs.
    • Model and promote an inclusive, strengths-based approach.
    • Participate in professional development and leadership meetings.
Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or related field (preferred)
  • Bachelor’s Degree (required)
  • Valid DC Special Education License or eligibility to obtain within one year
  • Minimum 5 years in special education, with leadership or compliance experience preferred
  • Expertise in IDEA, FAPE, ADA, Section 504, and DC regulations
  • Experience supervising staff or leading teams
  • Strong skills in writing, data analysis, and organization
