Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Facilitates the learning activities of exceptional children (students with specific learning challenges, speech/language impairments, intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, other health impairments, autism, hearing impairments, orthopedic impairments, visual impairments, and traumatic brain injury).
• Supports students in attaining grade-level, subject, school, and system objectives.
• Utilizes a wide variety of instructional strategies, devices, and methods.
• Works with small and large instructional groups.
• Functions effectively as a staff member of the school community.
• Teaches grade-level or content-area curriculum.
• Provides adequate educational experiences to enable each student to develop, interpret, and transmit ideas effectively.
• Provides opportunities for each student to develop problem-solving skills, think critically, and study effectively.
• Establishes a classroom climate conducive to effective learning and study.
• Organizes clerical and record-keeping duties to ensure that the instructional process is uninterrupted.
• Assists each student in addressing academic problems.
• Works closely with guidance counselors and instructional teams to address the specific needs of individual students.
• Contributes to the continuous improvement of the educational program by initiating suggestions for staff consideration.
• Serves on committees.
• Engages in appropriate studies and activities to improve professional competence.
• Contributes to solutions for educational problems within the school district.
• Works closely with parents to guide the growth and development of students.
• Updates, manages, and ensures the full implementation of IEPs.
• Assess student progress periodically throughout the school year in accordance with the district's progress-reporting schedule.
• Ensures that progress reports are completed based on established goals and by the individuals responsible for addressing those goals.
• Ensures that parents receive updated copies of goals with progress indicated, along with any additional notes or paperwork related to ongoing assessments.
• Ensures that parents are involved in the planning and implementation of the IEP process.
• Ensures that general education teachers implement the modifications and strategies prescribed in each student's IEP.
• Provides services to students within the general education classroom and collaborates with general education teachers.
• Collaborates with general education teachers on planning and IEP modifications for students with IEPs.
• Meets periodically with students to assess and discuss their progress, challenges, and needs related to achieving their goals and objectives.
• Meets with parents, students, educators, and clinicians involved in supporting students.
• Reviews student progress reports throughout the school year.
• Advocates for students and collaborates with all stakeholders.
