Job summary

The Pike Road Board of Education is seeking a Bus Aide to assist the bus driver in transporting students who have exceptionalities in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. This 179-day position is paid according to the board-approved salary schedule.

Responsibilities include loading/unloading, enforcing safety rules, monitoring behavior, and supporting the driver with routine needs. Candidates must pass a drug screening, background checks, and demonstrate effective communication with students,

Qualifications

  • Must pass a drug screening test as required by state and local policies.
  • Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama Statutes and State Board of Education regulations.
  • Knowledge of techniques and procedures used in working with students who have special needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and develop relationships with children.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and develop relationships with bus driver, parents, and school personnel.
  • Ability to learn school bus rules, regulations, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to secure students in a safe riding position and to reposition students as needed.
  • Ability to learn First Aid and CPR.
  • Ability to follow directions and work as a team.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with safe loading and unloading of students.
  • Enforce safety rules for students.
  • Monitor student behavior.
  • Administer to the individual needs of the students as required.
  • Escort student to class or office if needed.
  • Assist driver with keeping bus clean and with keeping needed supplies on the bus.
  • Be familiar, if assigned to special education students, with each student's exceptionality.
  • Be familiar, if assigned to special education students, with each student's physical needs.
  • Assist, if assigned to special education students, with door-to-door loading and unloading, if needed.
  • Ensure that students are secured (seatbelts, special seats, wheelchairs, and other) and monitor structures and/or equipment to assure safety.
  • Learn evacuation procedures and assist students and driver as necessary. Interact appropriately with students.
  • Follow all policies and laws governing transportation. Maintain familiarity with bus route to which assigned.
  • Communicate effectively with the bus driver, supervisor, students, parents, and school staff using tact and good judgment.
  • Follow attendance, punctuality, and proper dress rules.
  • Ensure adherence to good safety standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Model and maintain high ethical standards.
  • Demonstrate initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
  • Maintain expertise in assigned area to fulfill project goals and objectives.
  • Participate successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment.
  • Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
  • Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Serve on school/system committees as required or appropriate.
  • Exhibit interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
  • Demonstrate support for the school system and its goals and priorities.
  • Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement.
  • Prepare all required reports and maintain all appropriate records.
  • Participate in cross-training activities as required.
  • Performs other duties as required by supervisor and system leadership.
