Job summary

Port Huron High School is seeking a Special Education / Building Paraeducator to support students in a 191-day calendar. The position runs 6.75 hours daily, with duties spanning personal care, instructional assistance, and field trips when needed.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or GED, and may possess an associate degree or relevant education credits, MTTC/Parapro readiness, and CPI training. Salary data is per negotiated agreement.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required for consideration.
• An associate degree or 60 semester hours satisfies education requirements.
• Must pass MTTC Paraeducator Readiness or Basic Skills Test.
• Alternative SAT/READ and MATH scores may meet Basic Skills requirements.
• Must have or be willing to obtain CPI training for behavior support.

Responsibilities

• Support Special Education students with daily activities and instructional needs.
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff to promote learning.
• Assist with personal hygiene, health, and community living activities as needed.
• Join field trips and home visits when required to support students.
• Attend summer or after-school in-service trainings related to Special Education.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school graduate or equivalent (GED)
• Associate’s Degree or 60 semester hours at an institution of higher education, or Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through passage of a formal state or local academic assessment approved by the State Board of Education:
• Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Paraeducator Readiness Exam (MTTC) or the original Basic Skills Test (MTTC)
• A passing score of at least 480 on the evidence-based reading and writing section of the SAT and 530 on the mathematics section in lieu of the Basic Skills Test or Professional Readiness Exam
• ETS Parapro Assessment – A passing score of 460 is required
• Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) Trained or willing to be trained.
• Must be able to bend, twist, stoop, squat and lift up to 50 pounds in assisting students, if needed.
• Title I or Skipped Title I Schools require #1, 2, 3, or 4above achieved prior to being hired or applicant will be hired as a substitute until achieved.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental characteristics of Special Education Students.
• Demonstrate the ability to communicate appropriately with the students, parents and staff.
• Must be willing to provide assistance and instruction in the area of personal hygiene, toileting, health and fitness, and community living.
• Must be willing to participate in field trips and home visits when necessary.
• Be available to attend summer or after school in-service services which pertain to meeting the needs of Special Education students.
• Possess the ability to promote positive self-esteem and encourage academic growth
• Demonstrate good judgment to provide for the safety of all students and staff
• Demonstrate the flexibility to respond to changes in assignment in emergency situations as determined by the building principal.
• Maintain confidentiality in regards to student information as required by FERPA.
• Assist in carrying out educational plans as prescribed by IEP.
• Provide physical strength and stamina to meet the needs of Special Education students.
• Perform other related duties or tasks necessary to insure the success of students and the program.
• Conducts him/herself in a professional manner commensurate with his/her position and project a good public image of the School District in dealing with the community and employee groups.
