Job summary

Sylvania in Monahans, Texas, seeks a Classroom Aide to assist special education teachers in Behavior Intervention Classrooms. You will support IEP implementation, self-help and behavior management, and instructional programs under supervision.

You will supervise students, prepare instructional materials, assist with data collection for progress monitoring, and help maintain a safe, organized classroom environment. Prior experience with children and knowledge of basic technology are valued.

Qualifications

  • Two years of experience working with children preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Direct individual students or small groups in completing instructional assignments.
  • Reinforce academic or developmental skills which have been previously taught.
  • Supervise students throughout the school day including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
  • Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials.
  • Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom.
  • Gather data and other required information to assist teachers with progress monitoring.
  • Implement positive behavior supports to manage the behavior of students.
  • Intervene in crisis situations utilizing specialized training as required by state and local policy.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Job description

Primary Purpose:

Assist special education teachers in meeting the instructional needs of individual students with disabilities in Behavior Intervention Classrooms (BIC). Assist with classroom programming and the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEP), including self-help, behavior management and instructional programs. Work under general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of the certified teacher.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or hold a General Educational Development (GED) certificate
  • Have met formal academic assessment, associate’s degree, or two years of study at an institution of higher learning*
  • Valid Texas educational aide certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Inform the teacher of issues requiring immediate assistance.
  • Provide support to substitute teachers on routines/schedules.
  • Abide by rules of confidentiality.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local policy, procedures and guidelines, and specific campus procedures and guidelines.
  • Contribute toward a positive and professional learning environment in the school.
  • Participate in staff development programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
  • Maintain emotional composure when dealing with difficult behavioral issues.
  • Attend district approved crisis intervention training.
  • Implement crisis intervention strategies to promote safety using district approved restraints & control techniques.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; other specialized and adaptive equipment used by students

Posture:

Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.

Frequent walking; occasional fast-paced walking

Lifting:

Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); Occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning or students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting nonambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive and other classroom equipment

Environment:

Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases)

Mental Demands:

Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions; frequent multi-tasking; during crisis intervention, promote safety using district approved restraints & control techniques.
