Job summary

Boise Independent School District seeks a Special Education Assistant II in the Structured Learning Center to provide targeted instruction and support for students with autism aged 6-21. You will implement IEP goals in small groups, document progress, and assist with behavioral and functional skills development.

As part of a structured learning environment, you will collaborate with teachers, staff, and families, while ensuring student safety and confidentiality.

Qualifications

JOB STATUS: OPEN

POSITION TITLE: Special Education Assistant II- Structured Learning Center

Note: Due to the urgency to fill positions for the current school year jobs may close before the noted date.

SLC: Structured Learning Center

Students with autism ages 6-21 who require a high degree of structure to the design of their school program receive individual and small-group instruction in a setting outside of the general classroom. Instruction in pre-academic, academic, functional, communication, social, behavioral and independent living skills is provided on an individual and small-group basis. Students assigned to these classrooms are included in general education classes and environments when appropriate. These classrooms typically have 6-8 students and several classroom assistants.

Once hired, you may be reassigned to another special education classroom or location depending on District need.

New-to-District Classified employees may be eligible to receive credit for up to two years’ worth of credit for movement (steps) on the Classified Salary Schedule based on relevant prior work experience. Please complete the top portion of this form and provide it to your previous employer for completion. To qualify, newly hired employees must provide this form, completed by your former employer(s), to Human Resources no later than the date of their fingerprinting and appointment.

Note: Substitutes and student teachers are not eligible for the transfer application.

Please be advised that accepting full-time employment may affect any subsidy for health insurance purchased through the Idaho Health Insurance Exchange.

*Transferring employees or former District employees hired into this role will be placed on the "F" letter grade of the Classified Salary Schedule, but the initial step placement will vary based on a variety of factors.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Competency Requirements

Knowledge of

• Curriculum modification and accommodation methods;
• School and District rules, codes, standards, and expected student behaviors;
• Educational procedures, including classroom management and testing accommodations;
• Special Education methods and procedures for instructing students with moderate to severe physical, learning or emotional disabilities;

Ability to

• Follow written and oral instructions and observe District policies and procedures;

• Prepare and implement curriculum modifications;
• Prepare and maintain records and documentation;
• Work effectively with students of varied backgrounds and abilities;

• Operate classroom instructional equipment, office equipment, and a computer using programs appropriate to assigned duties;
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers and staff members, and other District personnel;

• Provide services that are billable through the Medicaid Health & Human Services Department.

• Maintain student and district confidentiality;
• Provide feedback to special education teacher concerning student performance in all goal areas;
• Assist and or accompany students at school based social situations; and various school activities;
• Provide student supervision as detailed in the IEP and as directed by the special education teacher;
• Provide job coaching to students at job sites for students (secondary);
• Assist teacher or related service provider in maintaining assistive, adaptive or medical equipment;
• Complete district training based upon Idaho Paraprofessional Standards;
• Ensure student safety through district approved de-escalation and physical intervention programs or training;
• Implement Assistive Technology devices and equipment;
• Assist with Curriculum and Instructional strategies specific to the assigned program or students;
• Provide district approved de-escalation and intervention strategies to reduce the need for physical intervention;
• Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with District policies, procedures and safety practices;
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

IEP Implementation and Teaching

• Assist individual students with goals within their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) through individual or small group instruction and implement District approved curriculum that is aligned with their individual goals. IEP goals may include academics, behavioral support, social emotional support, etc;
• Document student learning and progress through data collection and Medicaid billing under the direction of a teacher, or a related service provider, support the implementation of devices and identified equipment and resources identified to meet student needs;

Behavior Prevention, Support, and Response

• Foster a positive learning environment, build relationships, utilize positive behavior supports, and implement de-escalation strategies in order to address challenging behaviors;
• Utilize de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention strategies to prevent and/or minimize aggressive behavior;
• Implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) with fidelity.

Personal Care

• Assist students with personal care needs including but not limited to: toileting, feeding, mobility transfers and/or equipment use.

Acceptable Experience & Training

• High school diploma or GED equivalency; and
• Forty-eight (48) college credits or an Associate's Degree or successful completion of the ETS paraprofessional Praxis or equivalent; and
• Classroom or other instructional experience is preferred; and
• Google Suite experience is preferred; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform as an effective and competent Special Education Assistant.

Essential Physical Abilities

• Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively in person, and to hear sounds within the normal range of conversation;
• Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to monitor classroom activities and comprehend written work instructions and comprehend, review, and prepare a variety of written and text documents and materials;
• Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate classroom instruction equipment and office equipment, including a personal computer;
• Sufficient personal mobility, agility, strength, and reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to stand or sit for long periods of time, to lift or move objects or students that weigh up to 50 pounds, and to work in a detention and classroom environment;
• Job tasks may require, with or without reasonable accommodation, running, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling lifting, and grasping.
