Special Education Assistant – Behavior Support

Position Purpose
Working under the supervision of teachers, the Special Education Assistant provides instructional, clerical, supervisory, and behavior management support. The role supports the classroom teacher by implementing programming directed by teachers, administrators or the Case Conference Committee. The assistant works in either the Behavior Support Program or the Autism Spectrum Disorder Program.
Essential Job Functions
- Playground, lunchroom, rest periods, loading and unloading buses, hall duty, and other supervisory duties as directed.
- Supervise children who may struggle with self-regulation or sensory needs.
- Keep children in designated areas to prevent escape behaviors.
- Assist students with basic hygiene activities and routines.
- Implement Behavior Intervention Programs directed by the teacher.
- Develop positive relationships with students and staff.
- Provide one‑to‑one services for students with autistic or emotional behaviors when required.
- Ride or monitor buses as needed and receive compensation for extended hours.
- May be asked to follow a student for several years across grade levels.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Equipment
Standard office equipment: personal computer, printer, copier, fax machine, calculator, telephone.
Travel Requirements
Travel to district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Pay Rate
$15.75 per hour + $0.75 differential.
Work Schedule
The position’s hours will be scheduled between 6.5 and 7.5 hours per day and will be finalized at the time of hire, depending on student needs. 182 days per year.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- High School Diploma.
- Willingness and desire to work with special‑needs children.
- Effective human relations skills, calm and patient personality.
