- Assist the special education teacher with the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in inclusive and special education settings
- Prepare instructional materials
- Maintain administrative records and prepare required reports
- Provide assistance to substitute teachers
- Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including lifting when required
- Help manage student behavior
- Support instructional needs according to students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
- Assist with personal care as appropriate
- Learn and adapt to each student’s special needs
- Work with individual students or small groups
- Supervise students throughout the school day inside and outside the classroom
- Keep the teacher informed about individual students’ special needs or problems
- Maintain confidentiality
- Participate in staff development training programs and special events as assigned
- Implement, support, and document behavioral intervention strategies and/or provide school health, related, and personal care services as needed
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED
- Associate degree or two years of higher education preferred
- If hired, must complete SBEC certification process to obtain an Educational Aide Certification
- Ability to work with children with disabilities
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Knowledge of general office equipment
- Ability to work in a stressful environment and with frequent interruptions
- Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling
- Must be able to lift 25 lbs
- Must assume shared responsibility for the health, safety, and confidentiality of students and adults
- Candidates must be able to fulfill all assigned responsibilities and duties
