Job summary

Frederick County Public Schools in Frederick, MD, seeks a Special Education Instructional Assistant for Specialized Programs to support students with IEPs in FCPS programs (Expressions, Learning for Life, Pyramid, Rock Creek). Under supervision of teachers and admins, provide extensive student support and personal care as needed.

Role requires lifting and teamwork, with adherence to IEP goals; attendance and professional development encouraged.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; 48 college credits or AA degree or passing specific exams.
• 1–3 years’ experience with students with behavioral, communicative and/or intellectual needs.
• CPR/First Aid training completed within first year of hire.
• Crisis Prevention training completed within first year of hire.
• Registered Behavior Technician training completed within first year of hire.
• Clear written and spoken English; good communication.
• Willingness to participate in professional development.
• Ability to perform essential functions with or without accommodations.
• Regular and predictable attendance.

Responsibilities

• Support students under the direction of a Certificated FCPS staff.
• Communicate and document student progress.
• Set up materials, equipment, and assistive devices as directed.
• Facilitate student progress toward independence.
• Monitor and assist students during educational and recreational activities.
• Assist with routine personal care not required to be performed by a nurse.
• Monitor and assist students in meeting IEP goals and objectives.
• Carry out emergency action and health care plans as needed.
• Assist with classroom accessibility and scheduling.
• Participate in professional development trainings.
• Assist with administering, scoring, and recording assessments.
• May participate in crisis intervention techniques.
• Assist in student mobility, lifting devices and self-care needs.
• Work effectively in a team environment.
