Job Title: Special Education Teacher/Coach

Exemption Status: Exempt

Reports to: Principal

Primary Purpose:

Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to match student ability levels. Work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignment
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
  • Knowledge of ARD Committee process and IEP goal setting and implementation
  • Knowledge of curriculum adaptation for special needs
  • Effective communication skills
Experience:
  • Student teaching, approved internship, or related work experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  1. Instructional Strategies
  2. Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop IEPs through ARD process.
  3. Implement instructional, therapeutic, or skill development programs and document preparation.
  4. Assess student learning styles and plan appropriate strategies and materials.
  5. Present subject matter effectively, utilizing various techniques and technology.
  6. Work cooperatively with teachers to modify curricula and assist students in regular classes.
  7. Participate in ARD meetings regularly.
  8. Assist in selecting instructional media and resources.

Requirements for coaching positions include:

  1. CPR, First Aid, and Concussion Management certifications as per UIL rules.
  2. Current CDL certification and compliance with transportation requirements.
  1. Student Growth and Development
  2. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement.
  3. Provide or supervise personal and medical care as per IEP.
  4. Manage extracurricular activities and sponsor approved outside activities.
  5. Consult with district and outside resources on student needs.
  1. Classroom Management and Organization
  2. Create a conducive learning environment.
  3. Manage student behavior and administer discipline, including crisis intervention.
  4. Coordinate with teachers on behavior management.
  5. Ensure safety and oversee work of aides and volunteers.
  1. Other Responsibilities
  2. Communicate with parents, students, and staff.
  3. Maintain professional relationships and participate in staff development.
  4. Comply with regulations and maintain records.
  5. Attend meetings and serve on committees.
  6. Follow safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

Direct the work of instructional aide(s).

Working Conditions:

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer, peripherals, and instructional equipment.

Posture: Prolonged standing, frequent kneeling, bending, pushing, pulling, and twisting.

Motion: Frequent walking.

Lifting: May require lifting 45+ pounds, assisting students with disabilities, and moving equipment; may involve irregular hours.

Environment: Exposure to biological hazards.

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
