Job summary

Harper Woods Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Teacher for Harper Woods High School. You will develop and provide specialized instruction under the IEP framework, evaluate progress, and ensure compliance with state and federal requirements.

Under the direction of the Building Principal and Director of Special Education, you will collaborate with teams and communicate with parents, while coordinating services and assessments to support students with disabilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
• Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate or T2EA with one of the endorsements listed.
• Endorsements include SA, SV, SM, SE, or ZS.

Responsibilities

• Provides research-based specialized instruction to meet IEP goals.
• Assesses student progress and adjusts instructional techniques.
• Develops and implements annual IEP plans with goals and services.
• Schedules team meetings and works with child study team members.
• Coordinates delivery of special education services per IEP.
• Serves as primary contact for parents.
• Conducts special education evaluations and reevaluations.
• Provides direction to educational assistants as directed.
• Ensures compliance with district policies and state/federal rules.
• Completes district and state reporting requirements.

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Building Principal and Director of Special Education, the Special Education Teacher develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities; Evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives; follows State mandated due process procedures and functions as IEP Manager to assigned students.

Minimum Qualifications

Possess a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools or an equivalent agency.

Must possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate or Michigan Temporary Teaching Authorization (T2EA), with one of the following endorsements:

Cognitive Impairment (SA)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (SV)

Learning Disabilities (SM)

Emotional Impairment (SE)

Early Childhood Special Education (ZS)

Essential Functions of the job may include but are not limited to the following:

• Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student's IEP.


• Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.


• Employs various teaching techniques, methods, and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.


• Develops and implements annual IEP plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education related services required to meet those goals.


• Schedules team meetings and works cooperatively with child study team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.


• Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.


• Creates a positive learning experience with emphasis in individualized instruction using appropriate technology for each student.


• Serves as primary contact for the parent.


• Conducts special education evaluations and reevaluations.


• Provides direction, supervision, and evaluation of educational assistants, as directed


• Complies with the School Board policies and all state//federal rules and regulations.


• Completes all district and state reporting requirements.


• Provides consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom accommodations, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior modification plans, and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities.


• Performs other duties as assigned by principal or supervisor.
