Primary Purpose:
Assist in meeting the physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities both inside and outside the classroom. Support the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP), including programs for self-help, behavior management, and instruction. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or GED
- Educational Aide Certificate issued by SBEC
- Paraprofessional Assessment Certificate, Associate's Degree, or two years (48 semester hours) of college
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to work effectively with children with disabilities
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Effective communication skills
Experience:
- At least two years of experience working with children
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Support
- Assist teachers in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays
- Maintain a neat and organized classroom environment
- Manage inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment
- Assist with administrative records and reports
- Provide orientation and support to substitute teachers
Student Management
- Support students' individual needs, including transfers, positioning, and interpreting instructions
- Assist students with physical needs and personal care
- Manage student behavior, including crisis intervention and restraint when necessary
- Adapt to each student's medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs
- Work with students or small groups on motor skills and exercises as directed by teachers or therapists
- Support students throughout the school day, including lunch, bus, and playground duties
- Inform teachers of any student needs or issues
- Maintain data records on learning and behavior
- Manage personal car logs for Medicaid-eligible students and submit monthly
Other
- Maintain confidentiality
- Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, and events
- Attend annual training on physical restraint and CPR as needed
Equipment Used:
Wheelchair lifts, ramps, walkers, special needs bathroom equipment, computers, and assistive devices.
