Qualifications

  • Master's Degree required.
  • Valid Virginia teaching license with endorsement in Exceptional Education; admin/supervision preferred.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience as an exceptional education teacher.
  • Knowledge of regulations governing exceptional education programs.
  • Understanding of RTI and Child Find processes.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Bilingual skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of Virginia Regulations Governing Special Education and Virginia SOL/Alternate Assessment Program.
  • Collaborates with staff to observe and provide evidence-based instructional and behavioral strategies.
  • Provides compliance updates to principal/designees and reviews data (discipline, attendance, etc.).
  • Ensures IEPs are reviewed annually, contain parental consent, and filed correctly.
  • Ensures initial eligibility and triennial reviews within 65 business days; completes Indicators 9, 10, 11 as appropriate.
  • Conducts regular IEP audits for compliance with laws and policies.
  • Assigns students to an exceptional education case manager and maintains equitable caseloads.
  • Attends eligibility and re-evaluation meetings; monitors discipline data for students with disabilities.
  • Ensures transfer documents and out-of-state/division IEP processes; assists with transfers within 30 days.
