THE STARTING SALARY FOR THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO $92,917 - $115,937. Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidate's education and experience related to the position, as well as our agency budget and equity.
The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the state, state agencies, and elected officials, and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions.
The Service to State Agencies Section provides a full range of legal services, including litigation before State and federal tribunals, to various State agencies or components, such as the Administrative Office of the Courts, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of State Treasurer, and others. It also offers legal services to occupational licensing boards and local government agencies through oral and written opinions.
The primary purpose of this position is to independently provide legal services to the Department of Information Technology ("DIT"), which manages IT assets, infrastructure, and services for the state. The position is expected to serve as a lead Attorney IV in the statewide IT Procurement Section, advising on IT procurement contracts, conducting negotiations, and drafting reviews. Occasionally, the role involves preparing briefs for criminal appeals.
Applicants must submit one writing sample, preferably a trial or appellate brief or memorandum, no more than 20 pages, authored independently.
Note to Current State Employees: The salary grade for this position is LG09. All applicants should detail their full work history, including non-state service. The salary upon appointment will be recalculated based on relevant experience and other factors.

Qualifications include the ability to conduct depositions, draft motions and briefs, and litigate complex legal matters independently. Applicants must be licensed to practice law in North Carolina and have at least four years of professional legal experience.
