The Internal Revenue Service is seeking an experienced Attorney to provide legal representation in civil litigation within the North Carolina Department of Justice. THE STARTING SALARY FOR THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO $92,917 - $129,746. Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidate's education and experience related to the position, as well as our agency budget and equity.
Responsibilities:
The attorney in this position independently represents clients in all levels of civil litigation before State and federal courts, and before the North Carolina Office of Administrative Hearings. The attorney will work directly with client representatives to gather information, review documents, and interview involved individuals to effectively represent the client. The subject matter is complex, requiring an understanding of the clients’ programs, relevant laws, and procedural rules of administrative tribunals.
The attorney has responsibility to advise and represent assigned commissions independently. Familiarity with public records, open meetings, parliamentary procedure, administrative law, and related legal areas is necessary. The attorney must be prepared to advise the commission(s) during public meetings on legal issues, conflicts of interest, public meetings law, and administrative procedures.
The attorney responds to inquiries from the public and officials involving legal interpretations of statutes, rules, and regulations, conducting legal research to address complex issues. Contact with senior government officials and members of the General Assembly is required. The attorney also handles public records requests, ensuring compliance with DOJ policies and providing timely, accurate responses.
Department Information:
The North Carolina Department of Justice represents the state, agencies, and officials, defending the rights of North Carolina residents. It handles criminal appeals, assists district attorneys, and includes divisions such as the State Crime Lab, Justice Academy, and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards.
Division Information:
The Environmental Division within the Legal Services Division of the Department of Justice provides legal representation to the Department of Environmental Quality and related commissions. It handles civil, administrative, and criminal litigation, legal advice, and responds to inquiries from the General Assembly, Governor, and public.

Minimum Education and Experience:
Licensed to practice law in North Carolina and four years of responsible legal experience. The Attorney General's duty is to represent the state in litigation unless specified otherwise by law.
