Job summary

The Morgan Library & Museum invites applications for the full-time Reading Room Assistant. This role ensures researchers access to the Morgan's special and reference collections while maintaining security and safety.

Responsibilities include retrieving materials, reshelving, and organizing for readers and staff, plus reference desk duties and data entry. Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree with a strong humanities background; 2–3 years in a special collections setting is

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; humanities focus in Art History, History, or Literature desired; ALA-accredited Master's in library/archival or information studies a plus.
  • 2-3 years experience in a special collections library reading room or related experience desired.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills with close attention to detail; strong oral and written communication with diverse users and staff.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Drive)
  • Familiarity with Integrated Library Systems Voyager or FOLIO
  • Familiarity with a major Western foreign language (French, German, Italian, or Spanish)
  • Ability to handle and move heavy books and boxes, extensive walking and standing, and tolerate dust/odor during collection management activities

Responsibilities

  • Retrieve, reshelve, and organize materials for readers and staff.
  • Provide handling instructions for rare materials and perform reference desk duties.
  • Data entry and collaboration with Head of Reader Services and colleagues across the Morgan.
