Job summary

University of Chicago Library is seeking a Reader Services and Administrative Assistant to support access to Special Collections. The role includes staffing the circulation desk, handling transactions, and assisting with administrative duties for the Director and Center-wide activities.

The position requires high school diploma (Bachelor’s preferred), strong communication, organization, and discretion, and experience in a fast-paced library environment.

Qualifications

  • Public services experience in a high-volume, customer service-oriented environment required.
  • Experience with handling rare and fragile materials required.
  • Experience explaining and enforcing policies in an environment with sensitive materials required.
  • Experience conducting in-depth academic research at college level preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Staff circulation desk and oversee circulation of materials in Reading Room.
  • Assist with setting up new Aeon user accounts and guide readers on guidelines for use of Special Collections materials.
  • Respond to onsite and remote PDF scan requests through LibAnswers as assigned.
  • Provide administrative support for the Director of Special Collections and for Center-wide activities.
