Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Sterile Processing Department supervisor to direct and oversee SPD services and staff. The role requires extensive knowledge of instrumentation, equipment, inventory and case cart management, along with strong English communication and computer skills.

Responsibilities include supervising staff, scheduling, training, and ensuring documentation accuracy for sterilization and OR support, 2:45p-11:15p shifts, with a 40-hour week.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Current certification as a Central Processing Tech by a recognized agency.
• CHL or CSPM certification strongly preferred but must be obtained within 12 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Directs and supervises assigned personnel and handles evaluations, scheduling, orientation and training; makes recommendations on hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline and terminations.
• Plans activities in all SPD areas: equipment, decontamination, processing, instrument assembly, sterilization, and case carts.
• Oversees operation and effectiveness of all equipment and takes timely corrective action when needed.
• Coordinates cleaning, sterilizing, inspecting, storing and distributing sterile articles to ORs, ED and units as required.
• Verifies documentation such as sterilizer printouts and logs and corrects staff performance as indicated.

Hiring Range:

$63,710.40 - $114,712.00

(based on a full time schedule of 40 hours per week).

Please note that the final offer will vary based on scheduled hours. Compensation for part-time or reduced schedules will be prorated based on scheduled weekly hours, experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations.

Performs, plans, directs, and supervises all aspects of Sterile Processing Department services.

2:45p-11:15p

I. Major Responsibilities:

• Directs and supervises assigned personnel. Performs performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.


• Performs and plans the activity in all areas within Sterile Processing Department: equipment, decontamination, processing, instrument assembly, sterilization, and cart assembly.


• Supervises the operation and effectiveness of all equipment, taking corrective action where necessary in a timely manner.


• Supervises and coordinates activities involving cleaning, sterilizing, inspecting, storing, and distribution of sterile articles, including instrumentation and case carts to and from the Emergency Department, Main Operating Room, Day Surgery Unit, Hahnemann OR, Inpatient Nursing, Labor and Delivery Units and Ambulatory Clinics.


• Verifies all required documentation performed as required by staff assigned to shift: sterilizer printouts, BI incubator logs and charts, for sterilizers within the SPD area and OR's. Corrects staff performance as indicated.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

• High school diploma or GED certification.


• Current certification as a certified Central Processing Tech by a recognized certification agency.


• Certification as a Certified Healthcare Lead (CHL) or Certified Sterile Processing Management (CSPM) strongly preferred but must be obtained CHL or CSPM certification within 12 months of hire as a condition of employment at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

Required:

• Minimum of two years as a SPD Technician, SPD Technician Senior or Surgical Technologist experience and/or comparable supervisory experience.


• Must demonstrate expert knowledge of instrumentation, equipment, inventory management & case cart management.


• Proficient oral and written (English language) communication skills required in order to fulfill documentation requirements associated with the position.


• Demonstrated proficiency in computers.


• Must have effective interpersonal skills to work well with others.
