Job summary

North Memorial Health is seeking a Coordinator for SPD Instruments to manage and standardize surgical instruments across the Sterile Processing Department, ensuring availability and compliance. This role collaborates with OR teams, surgeons, vendors, and leadership to optimize instrument handling and workflow.

Key responsibilities include instrument tracking, inventory optimization, repairs coordination, and ensuring high-quality patient care through accurate instrument readiness and standards

Responsibilities

  • Manage, maintain, and standardize surgical instruments and specialty instrumentation across the SPD.

  • Lead instrument tracking, inventory optimization, and set standardization; coordinate repairs as needed.

About this position

The Coordinator, SPD Instruments is responsible for the management, maintenance, standardization, inventory control, and repair coordination of surgical instruments and specialty instrumentation throughout the Sterile Processing Department. This position serves as a key liasion between SPD, Operating Room staff, surgeons, vendors, and leadership to ensure instrument availability, regulatory compliance, and efficient workflow. The Coordinator, SPD Instruments provides subject matter expertise regarding instrument tracking, inventory optimization, set standardization, repairs, to support safe, high-quality patient care. This role is not a supervisory position but serves as a department resource and lead coordinator for instrumentation-related activities.

Requirements
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Graduated from an accredited school in Sterile Processing Technician Program required. Current team members hired before September 1, 2024, and any applicant participating in an NMH approved trainee program, are exempt from this requirement.
Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of Sterile Processing experience in an acute care setting.
  • Demonstrated experience with surgical instrumentation, assembly, inspection, and sterilization processes.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of surgical instruments, common medical abbreviations, and basic medical terminology
  • Ability to multi-task, work independently and as a team to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Effective planning, organizational and detail-oriented skills.
  • Strong communication skills with demonstrated ability to express ideas and information (both in written and oral form), clearly and concisely in a manner appropriate to the audience.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with conflict in a positive manner. Has awareness of, responds to, and considers the needs, feelings, and capabilities of others.
  • Ability to be accountable for quality customer service and respond appropriately to a variety of personalities and situations.
  • Proficient in oral and written communication using English with skills sufficient to perform functions of position.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to perform manual inspection, assembly and packaging methods for sterilization.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards.
  • Possess basic computer usage and skills to include, MS applications, internet, etc.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to operate automated SPD equipment.
Licensure/Certification
  • CRCSTCBSPD/HSPA required within 6 months of hire date
