Job description

JOB PURPOSE

Serve as the Spanish teacher for high school students, with a primary focus on Spanish II instruction. Ensure students meet or exceed proficiency goals in Spanish language acquisition as defined by the Principal and academic leadership. Build adaptive and collaborative relationships across the Helix community and support the mission and vision of Helix Mentorship and Maritime Academy to provide equitable, high-quality, and engaging instruction.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructional Responsibilities
  • Teach Spanish content and language skills aligned to Louisiana World Language Standards and appropriate grade-level outcomes, with a focus on Spanish II.

  • Deliver high-quality, standards-aligned lessons that emphasize grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, speaking, and cultural understanding.

  • Design purposeful and engaging lesson plans that maximize student learning and time on task.

  • Provide real-world, culturally rich examples and interactive experiences to support language acquisition.

  • Use various instructional strategies and differentiation to support diverse student learning needs.

  • Frequently assess student progress using diagnostic and formative assessments; adjust instruction accordingly.

  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and behavior.

  • Prepare students for required assessments and provide targeted support for students needing additional help.

  • Continuously expand knowledge of the Spanish language, Hispanic cultures, and language pedagogy.

Classroom Environment
  • Establish a classroom environment that fosters risk-taking in language learning, mutual respect, and cultural appreciation.

  • Maintain a positive rapport with students; demonstrate empathy, patience, and consistent classroom management practices.

  • Display student work and encourage use of the Spanish language in daily interactions and classroom routines.

  • Uphold schoolwide expectations for behavior and classroom norms aligned with Helix policies.

Instructional Planning
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that reflect instructional goals and the specific needs of Spanish II learners.

  • Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development and vertical alignment of Spanish I, II, and III (if applicable).

  • Use Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and accommodations to differentiate instruction as needed.

  • Safeguard instructional materials and maintain the integrity of classroom resources.

School & Community Engagement
  • Communicate consistently and positively with families about student progress and class updates.

  • Participate in schoolwide and extracurricular activities to build a positive culture and promote the Spanish program.

  • Support school initiatives and participate in ongoing professional development related to world languages and instructional practices.

  • Foster collaborative relationships with school staff and community partners.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
  • Demonstrated fluency in spoken and written Spanish.

  • Deep understanding of Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and culture.

  • Knowledge of effective second-language acquisition strategies.

  • Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Spanish, World Languages, Education, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.

  • State of Louisiana teaching certification in Spanish (or eligibility to obtain certification).

  • Minimum one year of experience teaching Spanish at the middle or high school level preferred.
