Job summary

Impulse Space is seeking an Opto-Mechanical Design Engineer Intern to support the development of precision optical systems for spacecraft. This internship focuses on mechanical design of optical assemblies, telescope structures, lens barrels, detector mounts, and alignment hardware, from concept to flight qualification.

Qualifications

• Recent completion or current pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
• Experience with mechanical design and opto-mechanical systems.
• CAD experience with NX, SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, or similar.
• Understanding of GD&T, drawings, tolerances, materials, fasteners, manufacturing, and assembly constraints.

Responsibilities

• Design opto-mechanical hardware for spacecraft optical systems, including lens barrels, telescope structures, detector mounts, optical benches, mirror mounts, baffles, and alignment features.
• Design mechanisms for optical systems, including gimbals, focus mechanisms, launch locks, adjustable mounts, and motorized stages.
• Develop mechanical architectures to meet optical performance requirements such as spacing, decenter, tilt, and alignment retention.
• Work with optical engineers to convert prescriptions into practical mechanical designs.
• Create CAD models, drawings, GD&T, BOMs, and test fixture designs.
