COSMIAC Research Center at the University of New Mexico is seeking a Research Engineer 2 to advance space systems research through hands-on design, testing, and analysis. The role emphasizes documentation, mentoring students, and contributing to multidisciplinary projects while ensuring compliance with DoD clearance requirements and DoD security standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a directly related field; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, analyzes, builds, and tests equipment and systems for space systems research.
  • Conducts research on advanced space systems technologies including communication architectures and radiation-hardened electronics.
  • Performs research assignments involving plans, investigations, surveys, structures or equipment related to spacecraft development, testing, and qualification.
  • Applies engineering theory and modern computational tools to solve technical problems in space systems.
  • Makes preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives for spacecraft systems development.
  • Conducts laboratory testing and characterization of space systems using specialized test equipment.
  • Integrates subsystems and components with proper interfaces and configuration control.
  • Reviews results of tests with principal investigators and faculty.
  • Develops and maintains technical documentation following established standards.
  • Serves as principal investigator on sub-projects in areas such as communication system development or electronics qualification.
  • Maintains currency of knowledge in relevant space engineering technologies.
  • Supports proposal development with technical input and cost estimates.
  • Mentors and provides guidance to students working on research projects.
