Job summary

GITAI seeks a Mechanical Engineering Intern / Co-op to join our team in Torrance, CA, working onsite on hardware for our Space-Based Interceptor program. You will move a hardware concept into a real part through CAD, drawings, and hands-on testing.

You will collaborate with engineers, technicians, and suppliers to advance design, fabrication, assembly, and verification, while learning in a fast-paced space robotics environment with demanding schedules.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related field.
• At least one year of sustained participation in a technically rigorous student engineering project (e.g., Formula SAE, rocketry, CubeSat, robotics, Baja SAE, Design-Build-Fly).
• Experience taking hardware through several development stages (design, fabrication, assembly, testing, troubleshooting, redesign).
• Experience using a professional 3D CAD system; SolidWorks preferred but not required.
• Willingness to work onsite at GITAI’s office in Torrance, California; U.S. citizenship due to export-controlled information.

Responsibilities

• Own mechanical hardware through design, manufacturing, assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and iteration.
• Design and update mechanical components, assemblies, interfaces, prototypes, ground support equipment, and test fixtures using 3D CAD and engineering drawings.
• Work with engineers, technicians, machinists, suppliers, and test personnel to turn concepts into buildable hardware.
• Support hands-on fabrication, assembly, inspection, integration, and test activities.
• Investigate manufacturing problems and test failures and apply lessons learned to next iterations.
• Document hardware configurations, design decisions, build issues, test results, and lessons learned; support field tests as required in Torrance.
