Registered Nurse – First Assist – Operating Room
Per Diem

Who We Are:

SNHMC has nine operating room suites, 25 pre-op/PACU bays, and a sterile processing department. Hours are flexible, with 8-, 10-, and 12-hour day shifts available. The OR has a dedicated call team Sunday through Thursday nights beginning at 7PM, making OR call minimal. Services range from elective and non-elective procedures, including neurological, orthopedic, gynecological, urological, bariatric, colorectal, vascular, ENT, general, breast, and plastics. Surgical services are growing and evolving, utilizing the latest technology for the wide variety of procedures we perform. The OR also offers Periop-101 and advancements.

About the Job:

As a member of the Surgical Services team, the RN First Assist (RNFA) is responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality, patient-family centered care in the OR and other areas of perioperative services for all patient populations. The incumbent will function as a RN First Assistant during operative and other invasive procedures and throughout the perioperative continuum in accordance with scope of practice credentials, privileges, experience, education, and competency verification. This role assists the surgical team with the verification process and basic intra-operative procedures and case closure protocol.

In addition to the basic RN responsibilities, the RN, FA, will perform advanced tasks including suctioning and irrigation, patient positioning, placing clamps and sutures, cauterizing wounds and vessels and closing wounds. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the surgeon, in collaboration with the RN Circulator and is accountable to the Clinical Nurse Manager and/or Director of Perioperative Services.

What You’ll Do:

  • Assist surgical team with verification process, intra-operative procedures, and closure.

  • Review the surgical booking and match procedures to preference cards.

  • Assess patients at intervals in accordance with facility or health care organization policies and procedures.

  • Evaluate surroundings to maintain sterile field.

  • Perform as a team member, participating in time out and pre- and intra-op communications.

  • Participate in preoperative assessment and planning for surgical patients specific to RN First Assist activities including, but not limited to, anatomical exposure and wound closure in collaboration with perioperative team members.

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing required

  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse First Assist program required.

  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of New Hampshire required.

  • RN First Assistant Certification (CRNFA) required.

  • Certification Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) certification required.

  • Current BLS certification required.

  • A minimum of two (2) years as a Registered Nurse required.

  • Knowledge and skills acquired through Reg education and certification.
