Job description

Job Description: Taper

Tapers are responsible for finishing walls, ceilings, and trim using hand tools and mechanical tools that meet the required standards of finishing. They work on new wall and ceiling installations, make repairs to existing walls, and install and finish metal, plastic, and aluminum trims. The role involves applying drywall tape compound to seams and indentations, applying multiple coats of compound, and sanding after each coat.

Additional responsibilities include:

  1. Reading and interpreting drawings
  2. Checking surfaces for tightness and proper fastening of panels
  3. Establishing work schedules and flow of work
  4. Organizing and verifying materials
  5. Cleaning and repairing tools
  6. Mixing joint compounds
  7. Applying fill and finish coats
  8. Finishing inside and outside corners
  9. Performing dry, wet, and vacuum sanding
  10. Skim coating over various materials
  11. Spraying finish compound
  12. Understanding the 5 levels and methods of drywall finishing

Tapers are primarily responsible for the quality and production of their work, reporting to a foreman or lead. They must work safely, maintain a safe environment, and adhere to precise standards of finish level. Physical requirements include climbing, balancing on scaffolds and ladders, lifting up to 100 pounds, and other physical activities necessary for the job.

Note: Wages vary by location and experience, with specific rates provided for LA and San Diego areas, determined by union scales as per collective bargaining agreements.
