Position Summary:

The Director, Access & Reimbursement (DAR) leads and coaches a team of Access & Reimbursement Managers (ARMs) responsible for access and fulfillment activities across nephrology healthcare provider accounts and executing the patient access field reimbursement strategy. The role ensures healthcare providers, patients, and caregivers are equipped with the necessary information, tools, and resources to start and stay on therapy. The Director also fosters compliant communication across internal teams including Patient Experience, Specialty Pharmacy, Market Access, and Field Sales.

This role involves mentoring, developing, and leading a diverse team skilled in nephrology, healthcare marketplace, and access & fulfillment, with a focus on impact for patients starting or remaining on therapy.

Responsibilities:

  • Hire, mentor, develop, and lead a field access & reimbursement team responsible for local access & fulfillment activities.
  • Ensure providers, patients, and caregivers are enabled with resources for therapy initiation and adherence.
  • Leverage KPIs and analytics to optimize field execution.
  • Develop strategic plans and manage their execution in a fast-paced environment.
  • Create a regional vision, foster team culture, motivate performance, build customer relationships, and achieve team goals.
  • Manage team performance, provide coaching, and address issues.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and policies through oversight and training.
  • Coach the team to expedite patient access.
  • Demonstrate core competencies in addressing access and fulfillment obstacles, including knowledge of pharmacy benefits, specialty pharmacy, and REMS.
  • Develop regional business plans to optimize patient initiation and pull-through metrics.
  • Become an expert in access & reimbursement, providing training and guidance to the team.
  • Collaborate effectively with field sales and leadership to support customers.
  • Maintain communication cadence between ARMs, hub services, REMS, pharmacy, and payers.
  • Support individual development through field and virtual engagement, issue resolution, coaching, and feedback.
  • Build relationships with key accounts to facilitate onboarding processes.
  • Train team members on coverage and payer coverage changes.
  • Ensure key messages on access and fulfillment are communicated during customer interactions.
  • Analyze regional performance, identify capability gaps, and work organization-wide to address them.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 10+ years in pharma/biotech or related experience, with preferred experience in specialty pharma, nephrology, rare disease, or REMS.
  • At least 5 years working with specialty medicines, including understanding access & reimbursement landscapes.
  • Minimum 3 years as a field reimbursement manager.
  • Minimum 3 years as a first-line team leader with proven coaching and development success.

Additional Skills/Experience:

  • Experience managing access complexities for new-to-market medications.
  • Familiarity with specialty pharmacy products and networks.
  • Ability to build relationships with HCPs, office staff, sales teams, and hub partners.
  • Deep understanding of private and public insurance reimbursement, including Medicare Part D, VA, etc.
  • Knowledge of reimbursement processes: benefit verification, prior authorization, appeals, denials, medical necessity letters, and pre-determinations.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills (Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to resolve issues and educate virtually.
  • Strong organizational skills, multitasking ability, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Previous management experience with performance management, coaching, and staff development.
  • Experience managing complex projects, timelines, budgets, and critical paths.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing project needs and strategies.
  • Field-based role requiring residence within the region or nearby, with access to a major airport.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle required.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50%, mainly within the region.
  • Ability to perform face-to-face work and meet credentialing requirements at healthcare facilities.
