Job summary

The Salvation Army Kroc Center is seeking an Afterschool Program Counselor for a part-time role in South Bend, IN. You will lead activities, build relationships with youth and families, and help create a safe, welcoming afterschool environment.

Starting pay is $14.00 per hour for 19 hours per week with a schedule Monday–Friday 2:00 PM–6:00 PM (Wednesday 10:00 AM–2:00 PM homeschooling). You will collaborate with the Education Director and help implement daily programming.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Preferred one year of experience working with youth.
• Ability and desire to work with children and parents.
• Ability and confidence to assist in teaching a variety of activities.
• Must maintain strict confidentiality as needed.
• Positive attitude toward work, helping others and caring for children.
• Bilingual language skills desirable.
• Must be able to carry up to 25 lbs.
• Must be able to bend, squat, twist, and stand as these movements are regular requirements.

Job description

Make a meaningful difference in the lives of local children by helping create a safe, fun, and welcoming afterschool environment at the Kroc Center! As an Afterschool Program Counselor, you’ll lead activities, build positive relationships with youth and families, and help kids learn, grow, and feel supported each day. This is a rewarding part-time opportunity for someone who enjoys working with children, being creative, and serving the community.

Starting Pay:$14.00 per hour

Part Time:19 hrs/week

Schedule Hours:Monday – Friday from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM.Homeschool schedule is 10:00 AM to 2:00 pm on Wednesday only. (Must be able to work some holidays as needed; hours of operation may vary.)

Job Summary

The purpose of the Afterschool Program Counselor is to be the face of the Kroc Center to the youth of the community and to the parents of the youth. The Afterschool Program Counselor will be a trustworthy conduit through which parents and youth can connect to the center. They will connect and lead the youth in the afterschool programs at the Kroc Center while helping to create and implement new daily programming based on their skill set and fulfill the vision of the Kroc Center. The Afterschool Program Counselor will collaborate with the Fine Arts and Education Director to help see through the vision of the afterschool program.

Key Responsibilities

• Promote the Mission of The Salvation Army.
• Assist in joyfully facilitating all daily camp activities.
• Observe all safety rules and regulations and use appropriate positive discipline consistently.
• Assist in emergencies or treatment of injured participants or staff. Follow up with completion of appropriate paperwork as directed.
• Serve as a positive role model for the youth of the community.
• Display integrity, enthusiasm and sound moral judgment. Other duties as assigned.

Expectations

• Follow all Safe from Harm policies and procedures.
• Practice vigilant supervision at all times.
• Work in a cooperative manner with the other on-site managers and coordinators of the Kroc Center.
• Handle disputes with participants, parents, staff and children in a professional manner.
• Attend all scheduled staff meetings when required.
• Adhere to dress code at all times.
• Perform other assignments/duties as directed.
