Job Details

The Popal Group is a growing family-driven boutique hospitality group setting the standard for DC dining through ambitious restaurant concepts. We are currently seeking an experienced Sous Chef to help join our kitchen team at our newest concept Maison. We are a small restaurant, and aim to be the 'neighborhood' place that is sought out by locals and world travelers alike.

Position Overview

The Sous Chef at Maison plays a vital role in supporting the Chef de Cuisine in ensuring the smooth daily operation of the kitchen. You will be helping create exceptional French-inspired dishes while leading and motivating the kitchen team to maintain quality and consistency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in overseeing all kitchen operations, ensuring that food is prepared to the highest standards.
  • Supervise kitchen staff, including managing schedules and helping resolve issues that arise during service.
  • Be ready at all times to operate/cover as a CDP and manage one section of the kitchen (e.g., pastry, sauce, grill).
  • Collaborate with the CDC on menu development, focusing on modern French cuisine that pairs well with the restaurant’s extensive wine list.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory levels, placing orders and managing food costs.
  • Uphold cleanliness, organization, and safety standards across the kitchen.
  • Support and mentor junior kitchen staff, offering constructive feedback and training.

Qualifications:

  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) a plus
  • At least 3 years of experience in a similar leadership role in a high-end kitchen.
  • Strong understanding of modern French cuisine and cooking techniques.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Culinary degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
