Overview
Under broad direction and general autonomy, the Sourcing Manager will establish and execute strategic sourcing processes, category strategies, and supplier strategies that improve the Company’s competitive cost position while ensuring security of supply, quality, service, and appropriate risk management. The role will focus on Total Cost of Ownership and proactively identify and develop cost-reduction, supply optimization, supplier performance, and strategic sourcing opportunities rather than relying solely on transactional price negotiations.
The Sourcing Manager will also be expected to lead and participate in transactional negotiations as business needs arise, including pricing, terms, volumes, lead times, freight, and other commercial requirements. These activities are an important component of the role, while the broader expectation is to leverage individual negotiations to identify and drive longer-term, sustainable sourcing opportunities.
The Sourcing Manager serves as the primary leader for the creation, planning, and execution of the Company’s sourcing management processes while developing and coaching sourcing personnel. The role partners closely with Procurement, Client Fulfillment, Manufacturing, Finance, Commercial, and Supply Chain teams to align sourcing strategies with business requirements and to ensure that sourcing decisions support the Company’s financial, operational, and customer objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Sourcing & Category Management
- Develop and execute sourcing strategies for assigned categories and spend areas, aligned with business requirements, market conditions, cost objectives, and supply-risk priorities.
- Analyze spend, supplier concentration, market dynamics, cost drivers, competitive alternatives, and Total Cost of Ownership to identify strategic sourcing opportunities.
- Develop annual and multi-year sourcing plans that establish priorities, initiatives, timelines, expected value, and risk-mitigation actions.
- Lead competitive sourcing events, including RFPs/RFQs, supplier benchmarking, bid analysis, supplier selection, and commercial negotiations.
- Identify opportunities for supplier consolidation, alternate sourcing, specification optimization, volume leverage, and other structural cost improvements
- Develop and manage strategic supplier relationships, including supplier segmentation, performance management, commercial strategy, executive business reviews, and long-term partnership development.
- Establish supplier performance expectations and utilize appropriate scorecards, metrics, and corrective-action processes to improve quality, service, cost, and reliability.
- Negotiate and manage strategic supplier agreements and commercial arrangements consistent with Company requirements and sourcing strategies.
- Build a balanced and competitive supplier base that supports security of supply, appropriate risk diversification, service requirements, and lowest total cost.
Cost & Value Optimization
- Develop and maintain a measurable sourcing savings pipeline and deliver annual cost-reduction objectives through strategic sourcing, negotiations, supplier development, market opportunities, and cross-functional initiatives.
- Optimize total cost, including material price, freight, payment terms, inventory, quality, reliability, lead time, service, and other relevant cost drivers.
- Develop should-cost, cost-driver, benchmarking, and market-based analyses to support negotiations and sourcing decisions.
- Lead commercial negotiations with strategic suppliers, including pricing mechanisms, terms and conditions, volume commitments, service requirements, and other commercial provisions.
- Identify and implement sustainable cost improvements rather than relying on one-time or transactional price reductions.
- Develop actionable market intelligence by monitoring raw-material economics, supply and demand, producer capacity, industry developments, logistics, feedstocks, and other market drivers that influence sourcing decisions and pricing.
- Translate market intelligence into sourcing strategies, negotiation plans, forward-looking cost outlooks, and risk-mitigation actions.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate supplier and category risks, including sole-source exposure, capacity constraints, financial risk, geopolitical risk, logistics disruptions, quality issues, and business continuity concerns.
- Develop alternate-source and contingency strategies for critical materials and suppliers.
- Utilize ERP, business intelligence, and analytics tools to identify trends, risks, opportunities, and emerging sourcing requirements.
- Establish fact-based analytical processes that improve sourcing decisions, forecasting of cost trends, and prioritization of sourcing initiatives.
Planning, Analytics & Reporting
- Develop Sourcing KPIs, dashboards, and reporting that measure savings, sourcing pipeline, spend coverage, supplier performance, risk, and other key indicators.
- Provide regular executive reporting on spend, cost trends, savings performance, supplier performance, market conditions, risks, and forward-looking cost outlook.
Team & Cross-Functional Leadership
- Directly supervise Sourcing Specialists and/or Analysts and provide coaching, performance management, and career development.
- Establish departmental priorities, performance expectations, operating routines, and accountability for sourcing results.
- Develop standard operating procedures, sourcing tools, training programs, and analytical capabilities that increase the strategic effectiveness of the sourcing organization.
- Establish an operating model that clearly differentiates strategic sourcing, analytical, and tactical activities and continuously increases the team’s strategic capabilities.
- Partner with internal stakeholders to align product, manufacturing, supply chain, inventory, commercial, and sourcing strategies and identify opportunities to improve total value.
- Collaborate with Supply Chain on material availability, inventory strategies, supplier risk, and continuity of supply.
Candidate Requirements
- 10+ years of progressive supply chain experience, with the most recent role being in a strategic capacity such as strategic sourcing, category management, procurement strategy, or a related discipline.
