Job description

Viterbo University is searching for a multi-faceted theatre event technician adept at sound engineering and audiovisuals with strong organizational and people skills to join our event staff of the Fine Arts Center (FAC). This full-time, salaried position will find you working on a range of projects including live shows and events produced on campus and a variety of touring productions presented in the FAC, across campus, and at the Weber Center for the Performing Arts in downtown La Crosse. Responsibilities include, overseeing the performance advance process and procurement of equipment, lead labor scheduler, FOH mix engineering, monitor engineering, setting up and maintaining audio and video equipment, enhancing audio with appropriate sound effects, fixing sound-related issues, working with producers, singers, musicians, performers, and speakers, and completing projects to specifications. You will provide creative input and follow plans and instructions from others, including guest artists / sound engineers / designers.

To be successful in this position, you should demonstrate patience, time management, attention to detail, and great interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will demonstrate they can think on their feet, learn from mistakes, and make effective recommendations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Production (50%):

  • Meeting with clients to determine the physical and sound requirements and specifications of live performances
  • and recordings.
  • Mixing, manipulating, and enhancing live and recorded audio to client specifications.
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting equipment.
  • Keeping abreast of advancements in the field through ongoing training and networking with others in the industry.
  • Maintaining clean and orderly work areas including performance and backstage spaces, technical control areas
  • and all storage.
  • Safely setting up, repairing, servicing, and replacing equipment when required in collaboration with other
  • members of FAC team including (not limited to): audio, video, lighting, staging, rigging and fall protection.
  • Building solid, professional relationships with colleagues, other artists, and clients.
  • Ensuring proper safety measures are in place and followed in accordance with the EPA, USITT, and OSHA
  • standards and the La Crosse Fire Department codes.

Administrative (50%)

  • Oversee the performance advance process, backline requirements, and other equipment fulfillment for all Fine
  • Arts Center professional series performances.
  • Serve as the lead labor scheduler for student work schedules, training and attendance records, and reporting.
  • Additionally, scheduling, recruiting, and hiring of over-hire for Fine Arts Center operations.
  • Understanding briefs and making helpful suggestions if possible and appropriate.
  • Coordinating and executing emergency evacuation plans when necessary.

General Requirements / Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and professional sound engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience as a sound engineer.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a roadhouse environment.
  • Experience mixing live events / concerts / theatrical productions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of large format line array systems, digital audio mixing consoles (Yamaha QL and CL
  • series preferred), networking as it pertains to audio, video, and lighting signal flows, Dante, and Qlab.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of software.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Practical experience with recording, editing, and mixing software.
  • A good ear and creative spirit.
  • Ability to follow instructions and remain professional under pressure.
  • Sound troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • This position will require working nights, weekends, and occasional holidays.

Physical Requirements

The physical requirements to successfully perform the essential functions of this job will require you to:

  • Regularly stand, walk, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Use hands to handle, feel, and talk or hear.
  • Reach with hands and arms.
  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 - 100 pounds.
