Job description

Position Title: Sorter/Cashier

Department: The Salvation Army, Divisional Regional Operations

Ketchikan Family Store, Gateway Corps

Reports To: Store Manager/Corps Officer

FLSA Status: Part-time / 29 hours per week; Non-exempt

SCOPE OF POSITION:

The Sorter/Cashier is responsible for operating the point-of-sale system, checking out customers courteously and efficiently. They will maintain store cleanliness, perform basic janitorial duties, and organize products. They are responsible for putting up sales and marketing signs appropriately and assisting in processing donations. As the store's face, they serve as a brand ambassador for The Salvation Army, fostering a safe, positive, and professional Christian environment aligned with the values of Jesus Christ and The Salvation Army.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Minimum 1 year work experience in any field, preferably sales/retail.
  2. Strong communication and customer service skills.
  3. Ability to complete all assigned training.
  4. Ability to work independently and professionally.
  5. Ability to work well within a small, dynamic team.
  6. Valid Driver's License (preferred).
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
  1. Fast learner, capable of managing multiple priorities.
  2. Flexible and open to new ideas and methods.
  3. Basic math skills without calculator or device.
  4. Positive customer service orientation.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  2. Communicate effectively with customers, supervisors, and coworkers.
  3. Manage and record till transactions accurately.
  4. Supervise volunteers per Salvation Army policies.
  5. Keep racks and shelves organized and clean.
  6. Answer phones as needed.
  7. Operate equipment such as computers, POS systems, phones, and time clocks.
  8. Proficiency in MS Excel is preferred.
  9. Arrive on time and be flexible with hours.
  10. Handle cash register duties accurately.
  11. Assist with store cleanup and organization.
  12. Perform basic cash handling and change-making skills.
  13. Maintain a professional appearance and adhere to dress code.
  14. Attend required training sessions, including safety and child protection.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned by management.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Indoor store environment with low noise levels. No exposure to extreme temperatures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires walking, standing, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs, and operating various equipment. Accommodations may be requested for physical limitations.

Additional Skills and Requirements:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and database applications.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions and work with diverse individuals.
  • Basic math and performance skills such as punctuality and organization.
