Job description

Senior Sonographer - Radiology -(0830-1700 or 0930-1800) Downtown Campus

The University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA) Radiology department is hiring for one position at either the Sonographer (Pay Grade 5) or Sr. Sonographer (Pay Grade 7) level, depending on qualifications. Please specify in your cover letter which position you are applying for, or both.

University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown, a 194-bed hospital, joined Iowa’s only comprehensive academic health system on Jan. 31, 2024.

Selective candidates may be eligible for a sign-on bonus of $10,000. Current UI employees are not eligible.

This position involves performing complex radiographic procedures independently, contributing to diagnosis and treatment, and participating in teaching and evaluation of fellows, residents, and medical students.

Schedule: Days, 8:30am-5pm or 9:30am-6pm, rotating Saturdays.

Duties include:

  • Assisting Radiologists with imaging and invasive procedures, including mammography (e.g., Breast Needle Localization).
  • Maintaining required continuing education for ARRT and Permit to Practice.
  • Interviewing patients, recording medical histories, and assessing physical states.
  • Operating radiographic equipment safely, participating in quality improvement, and performing mammographic and diagnostic radiographic procedures.
  • Preparing medications and contrast media, ensuring patient safety, and providing emotional and physical care to patients.
  • Adhering to radiation safety protocols and hospital guidelines for patient registration and safety.

Senior Sonographer responsibilities include:

  • Obtaining comprehensive health histories, performing physical exams, and developing care plans.
  • Providing primary, acute, and complex care, managing patient referrals, and formulating diagnoses.
  • Ordering and interpreting diagnostic procedures, forming differential diagnoses, and prescribing interventions.
  • Using evidence-based practices, providing consultation, and facilitating patient transitions across healthcare settings.

Qualifications for Sonographer:

  • Completion of a 2-year or more accredited health science program and a 12-month formal Sonography education, or equivalent.
  • ARRT registration and certification in Mammography within 9 months of employment.
  • Willingness to travel to outreach clinics across Iowa.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Qualifications for Senior Sonographer:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Radiation Sciences or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of progressive diagnostic sonography experience.
  • Certification by ARDMS or similar organization.
  • Strong communication skills, experience in clinical education, and desirable additional qualifications.
