Job summary

The University of Virginia UVA Health is seeking a Sonographer to work with radiologists to obtain high quality ultrasound images and provide exceptional patient care at UVA Community Health.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, an associate degree in diagnostic medical sonography, ARDMS or ARRT certification within first year; one year sonography experience preferred; strong communication, multitasking, and ability to work with diverse patient ages.

Qualifications

JOB SUMMARY

Work in concert with the radiologists to obtain high quality ultrasound images and provide exceptional patient care.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or GED. Associate's Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography preferred. Must meet the education requirement for diagnostic medical ultrasound certification with ARDMS or ARRT.

Experience: 1 year experience in sonography preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.

Licensure: ARDMS certified within first year of employment required.

Additional Skills/Requirements Required: Demonstrates proficiency in verbal and written communications. Ability to work in a stressful environment. Ability to multitask and prioritize quickly. Ability to perform diagnostic procedures and to meet the specific needs of various patient age groups: neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.

Competencies:
  • Patient Care: Ensures patient safety and comfort while in the radiology department.
    • Explains the procedure and post-procedure orders to the patient to gain cooperation and minimize anxiety.
    • Prioritizes workflow in regard to patient condition and ensures patients' arrival and departure occur in a timely manner.
    • Provides an atmosphere conducive to gain the patient's cooperation and confidence.
    • Utilizes data received from patient satisfaction and practice performance results to identify opportunities to improve and participates in the planning and improvement process.
  • Compliance: Follows and supports OSHA regulations and uses universal precautions when required.
    • Cleans examination surfaces between patients.
    • Provides clean linen including sheets, gowns, pillowcases, and towels.
    • Immediately cleans spills following universal precautions.
    • Properly stores accessory equipment when not in use.
  • Teamwork: Works within a team to achieve patient and team goals.
    • Shares and initiates regular and professional communication with co-workers.
    • Facilitates and participates in regular staff meetings.
  • Technical Competency: Follows routine standards and properly and safely manipulates equipment, within its limitations, to obtain images.
    • Maintains sterile equipment and fields.
    • Adjusts cameras to obtain the proper density and contrast.
    • Performs any necessary warm-up and quality control procedures on the equipment.
    • Uses protocols to obtain images of internal structures.
    • Critiques images for quality and makes necessary judgments to determine if repeat is necessary.

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Medium to Heavy Physical Demand: The job requires constant standing, frequently walking, and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment.   • The base compensation for this role is $43.65 hourly. Please note that the pay rate does not include any applicable incentive compensation programs such as shift differentials, clinical ladders, and other incentives that may be available for those in eligible positions.
