Job summary

A leading material handling solutions provider is seeking a Senior Solutions Engineer for their Chicago office. This role is pivotal during the pre-sales process, assisting teams to design efficient material handling systems that meet customer specifications. Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Computer, or Electrical Engineering and over 7 years of relevant experience. Skills in AutoCAD and client relations are essential. This desk-based position requires strong multitasking abilities and may involve interaction at customer sites.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7 years experience in material handling systems for medium to large scale projects.
  • Proven ability to conduct system audits on existing material handling.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the sales team in managing pre-sales designs and estimates.
  • Reviewing proposal specifications and drawings for scope of work.

  • Conducting concept review meetings.

Job description

Senior Solutions Engineers are responsible for the designs, applications and specifications of material handling systems & hardware designs during the pre‑sales phase of a project. This position plays a key role within the pre‑sales process and works closely with internal teams, vendors, and Trew's Market Partners to design creative, robust, project solutions that meet or exceed customer specifications for a winning solution. This position identifies project resources along with hardware requirements for the scope of work that has been developed and generates estimates for the cost of labor, material, equipment, and subcontractors. Finally, this position will lead the development on the next generation of material handling development tools to drive efficiency and automation of tasks / processes / workflows within the presale organization.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Assisting the sales team in managing pre‑sales designs and estimates
  • Reviewing proposal specifications and drawings as well as attending pre‑bid meetings to determine scope of work
  • Developing estimates for engineering hours, hardware and subcontracted services
  • Conducting concept review meetings as required
  • Assisting in preparing sales proposals, documentation and customer presentation
  • Reviewing many factors and uses judgment within defined practices and procedures to determine appropriate actions
  • Reporting proposal status to management
  • Meeting with customers to discover project requirements
  • Managing as‑sold documentation and delivery to the project team
  • Mentoring less experienced engineers on industry and technical knowledge
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of Material Handling systems design
  • Excellent client follow through skills
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask in fast paced and high‑volume environment
  • AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, Visual Basic
  • Perform system audits on existing material handling
Education & Experience
  • Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering or equivalent combination of materials handling experience and education
  • 7 + years of experience in material handling systems working on medium to large scale projects

Work Environment: This is primarily a desk‑based role, requiring extended periods of sitting and computer use. While the role is mainly desk‑based, mobility within the office, manufacturing facility and customer sites may be required for meetings and interactions with colleagues.

Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. Ability to traverse office, manufacturing facility and customer sites.
