Job summary

Clever Devices, (Hitachi Rail CD U.S. Ltd.) is seeking a Solutions Architect to design technical solutions in response to RFPs and SOWs, producing compliance matrices, diagrams and technical descriptions for formal proposals.

You will work with account management, proposal leadership, and various departments to determine win strategies and to lead software/hardware interface definitions where needed. Hybrid work with regional office in Long Island, NY or Apex, NC, and travel as required.

Qualifications

  • Engineering or technical background; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 4–10 years of related systems engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of system architectures, methods and techniques.
  • Experience with comms tech and protocols (modems, routers, J1939/J1708, RS232, VoIP, Ethernet/POE).
  • Transit/ITS experience a plus; rail systems preferred.
  • Proficient in Excel and Visio; comfortable with Word.

Responsibilities

  • Read RFPs and assign compliance matrix to product managers.
  • Respond to system requirements and review responses.
  • Evaluate system options and assess risks, costs, time and resources.
  • Design proposed solutions and determine system specifications for hardware/software compatibility.
  • Create architecture diagrams and technical descriptions for proposals.
  • Collaborate with product management, engineering, pricing and management.
  • Provide input for documentation and stay updated on industry trends.
  • Maintain templates and proposal databases; support bid library.

Job description

We are continuing to grow, and are looking for a Solutions Architect to join our team.

For candidates living near the Long Island, NY or Apex, NC area, this position is a hybrid position requiring 2+ days per week in the office. For those outside of those regions, we would consider remote employment with travel to our offices on an as-needed basis.

The Solutions Architect is responsible for designing a technical solution in response to Requests for Proposal (RFP) specification requirements, as, well as SOW requests, and producing the technical content (the completed compliance matrix, diagrams, solution description, etc.) of a formal proposal. This includes developing and defining the system architecture / technical solution, defining the project deployment plan based on required engineering development, gathering, analyzing, and formatting information, writing drafts, ensuring compliance with the RFP, and seeking the appropriate approvals.

The Solutions Architect will work with the Account Manager and Proposal Lead from bid board to proposal submittal in determining the win strategy, as well as leveraging the Product Management, Deployment, and other departments as deemed necessary. In addition, where required, the Solutions Architect is responsible for leading the support of the definition of software and hardware development and interfaces for the proposed solution.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Reads RFPs, including technical requirements
  • Assigns compliance matrix and sends to product managers for responses
  • Responds to overall system requirements and reviews all product manager responses
  • Performs evaluation of system alternatives and assessment of risks and costs, including:
  • Scope

  • Analyzes user’s requirements, concept of operations documents, and high-level system architectures to develop system requirements specifications
  • Designs the proposed solution
  • Determines system specifications, input/output processes, and working parameters for hardware/software compatibility
  • Collaborates with product management, systems engineers, pricing, and management
  • Designs system architectures to include the software, hardware, and communications to support the total requirements and provides for present and future cross functional requirements and interfaces
  • Creates solution Architecture diagrams, final customer-facing requirements responses, and technical description of the solutions
  • Provides input for documentation on new or existing systems
  • Stays connected to the industry and seeks out industry and competitor trends, communicating such trends to management. Understands new product development as it relates to developing the proposal technical solution
  • Maintains quality results by using templates; following proposal-writing standards including readability, consistency, and tone; maintains proposal support databases
  • Serves as technical resource within systems deployment team
  • Updates the bid library as required
Qualifications
  • Engineering and / or technical background (Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Computer Engineering is preferred)
  • 4-10 years of related systems engineering experience preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge of system architectural principles, methods, and techniques
  • Working knowledge of communication technology and protocols including modems, routers, J1939, J1708, RS232, VoIP, Ethernet / POE, switches, etc.
  • Network knowledge including WLAN, cellular, VPN, etc.
  • Hardware knowledge such cameras, DVR, LED / LCD signs, etc.
  • Public Transit / ITS experience a major plus, especially rail systems
  • Expert working in Microsoft Excel, and Visio, comfortable in Microsoft Word
  • Strong project management skills and ability to meet deadlines in a comprehensive manner; ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize (Organized, timely, corporative, and analytical)
  • Comfortable presenting to Senior Management
  • Exceptional written, presentation, interpersonal and communications skills
  • Expert in Excel, Word, Project, Visio, and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with SharePoint and Microsoft Teams preferred
  • Experience with government procurement preferred
  • Ability to travel when required, work late and work over the weekend on occasion to meet deadlines
  • Knowledge and/or experience with the following is preferred:
  • IT architecture, infrastructure, and cloud development
  • Engineering and software architecture design
  • Business analysis
  • Project and product management
  • Strong understanding of the transit industry and intelligent transit systems used on public transportation
