Job summary

Cumberland County is seeking a safety‑m focused heavy truck operator to support Solid Waste Management. You will drive a semi-tractor-trailer and roll-off trucks, perform pre‑trip inspections, and maintain daily records while adhering to all safety regulations.

Job description

Help keep Cumberland County clean, safe, and environmentally responsible! Solid Waste Management provides residents with dependable locations and services for the proper disposal, transportation, and recycling of solid waste materials generated throughout the county.

Under limited supervision, this position operates heavy trucks to safely collect and transport solid waste and recyclable materials. Services are provided to schools, County facilities, container and recycling sites, the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, Ann Street Landfill, Construction and Demolition Landfill, and Wilkes Road Treatment and Processing Facility.   • Operates a semi-tractor-trailer to transport mulch from the Wilkes Road Treatment and Processing Facility to designated locations throughout North Carolina and South Carolina
  • Operates a roll-off truck to transport container boxes when not assigned to semi-tractor-trailer duties
  • Complies with all applicable traffic laws, transportation requirements, departmental procedures, and safety regulations
  • Exercises appropriate caution when operating vehicles during hazardous weather, traffic, or roadway conditions
  • Reports unsafe vehicle or roadway conditions to the appropriate supervisor and highway authorities, as required
  • Conducts required pre-trip and safety inspections of the truck and trailer before each leg of travel to confirm road readiness
  • Verifies that each load is properly balanced, safely contained, and compliant with applicable weight and transportation requirements
  • Ensures tarps and other load‑securing devices are properly installed and secured before transportation
  • Adjusts or corrects loads when necessary to comply with applicable legal and safety requirements
  • Accurately maintains required daily records of mileage, driving hours, inspections, and other transportation activities
  • Completes daily inspection documentation following each required vehicle safety check
  • Promptly reports vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, and other safety‑related concerns to the supervisor or department head
  • Reports vehicle malfunctions to the Equipment Inventory/Service Coordinator and documents each issue on the appropriate daily inspection record
  • Cleans assigned trucks and trailers daily to remove accumulated dirt, debris, and grease
  • Maintains the vehicle wash‑rack area by removing trash and properly storing all supplies and equipment after use

High school or General Educational Development diploma and four (4) years of experience involving operation of semi‑tractor trailers and heavy trucks; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must meet industrial physical examination for sight, hearing, cardiovascular, pulmonary, chest x‑rays, blood pressure, blood sugar and lead levels, chemistry profiles such as cholesterol and liver functioning, etc., prior to employment.

  • Knowledge of the operating principles, procedures, and proper use of heavy trucks and motorized equipment
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards, required safety precautions, and safe operating practices associated with heavy trucks and equipment
  • Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances, regulations, and departmental requirements governing solid waste transportation and heavy‑truck operations
  • Knowledge of Cumberland County’s geography, roadways, and roadside container‑site locations
  • Knowledge of the organizational structure and functions of Solid Waste Management and related County departments and agencies
  • Skill in safely and efficiently operating heavy trucks in accordance with applicable traffic laws, safety regulations, and departmental procedures
  • Skill in developing proficiency in the operation of heavy and specialized motorized equipment
  • Skill in cleaning, inspecting, and assisting with minor repairs and routine maintenance of heavy trucks and related sanitation equipment
  • Ability to identify and promptly report equipment malfunctions, hazardous conditions, and safety concerns
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, work assignments, safety procedures, and established routes
  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy, and professionalism when interacting with coworkers and members of the public
  • Ability to safely perform the physical labor and essential job functions required of the position
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other departments, agencies, and the public

Conditions of Employment

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver’s license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire.

North Carolina State Class A CDL driver’s license, clean driving record. License shall not be restricted to automatic transmission. Interstate endorsement required.

Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre‑employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment. Refusal to submit to testing or testing positive for prohibited substances will result in the withdrawal of the conditional employment offer.
