Mecklenburg County Government seeks a Solid Waste Technician III to operate heavy equipment at the Foxhole Recycling Center and landfill, assist customers, and maintain safety standards. Eligible applicants bring at least four years of related experience, a high school diploma, and the ability to perform manual labor in varying weather.
Salary Range: $25.89 - $29/hourly

As a Solid Waste Technician III, this position will require that the incumbent hold at least a CDL Class B, or obtain one within 8-months of selection into the position. The job will operate heavy equipment at our Foxhole Landfill, which will include roll-off trucks, landfill bulldozers and compactors, and off-road dump trucks. The position will also assist with customer interactions at our drop-off areas for trash and recyclables, screening incoming loads of materials and gently directing customers recycle correctly.
This position will require work on rotating Saturdays, as our program operates six-days a week. Much of the work will be outdoors operating and maintaining equipment (daily greasing and fueling). The incumbent may also work with our Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection and processing operations at the site. Incumbents must be able to stand and walk much of their assigned shifts.
Under general supervision performs skilled activities that may include operating and maintaining heavy equipment at solid waste management facilities, may include accepting and processing Household Hazardous Wastes (HHW) and may include direct customer service interactions. Incumbent may operate such equipment as Roll Off Trucks, Backhoes, Skid Steers, forklifts, powered carts, and similar equipment. Incumbent may also complete routine equipment inspections, fueling and preventive maintenance requirements; This position will also require the knowledge of acceptable and non-acceptable waste types and familiarity with NC DEQ waste standards. This position will be working outdoors and may perform manual labor. The incumbent shall adhere to safety procedures at acceptance centers or landfill facilities to process Municipal Solid Waste, Household Hazardous Waste, Construction Demolition Debris, Yard Waste debris and Recyclable Materials.
Basic understanding of applicable computer programs, use of two-way radios, smart phones and tablets used in vehicle routing. Physical Demands
