Job summary

The City of Wilmington, NC is seeking a dependable Solid Waste Operator to operate a trash/flatbed truck on a daily route in the Central Business District. The role involves collecting refuse, bulky items, and recyclables while adhering to safety guidelines, and disposing of waste at appropriate sites using the truck’s ejection system or dump body.

Typical duties include assisting other operators, daily street cleaning, event support, and weekly vehicle maintenance.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED and one year of related solid waste collection experience.
• Ability to lift 75 lbs for extended periods and perform duties in inclement weather; valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

• Operate trucks with pre-trip and post-trip inspections and follow route safely.
• Collect waste and recyclables while following disposal guidelines by item type.
• Perform daily street cleaning with brooms, shovels, hoses, and pressure washers.
• Assist in special assignments, events, and maintenance tasks; keep trucks clean and safe.
