Job summary

Cumberland County Solid Waste Management seeks a strategic Deputy Director to provide administrative and operational oversight across disposal, recycling, and related programs. The role oversees container sites, landfills, and public outreach while ensuring compliance and safety.

The ideal candidate will supervise staff, manage budgets and contracts, engage with partners, and drive environmental education initiatives.

Qualifications

• Degree in environmental management, civil engineering, or related field.
• Four years of supervisory experience in waste management.
• Must meet physical examinations and possess valid NC CDL or able to obtain.
• MOLO certification required within three years of hire.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Deputy Director and assist with planning, directing, and evaluating departmental programs.
• Oversee landfill operations, scale house, recycling, and composting programs.
• Direct repair and maintenance and oversee inventory and supply management.
• Supervise personnel including operators, drivers, inspectors, and staff.
• Recruit, hire, onboard, train, and manage performance and disciplinary actions.
