Job summary

Aiken County (SC) is seeking a motivated individual to operate and maintain equipment used in the county landfills. Under supervision, you will handle heavy and light machinery to move refuse, cover areas with dirt, grade slopes, and maintain drainage ditches and access roads.

The role also includes giving guidance to junior operators, performing routine vehicle maintenance, and ensuring compliance with county policies, safety standards, and applicable laws.

Qualifications

• Requires a high school diploma or GED.
• 1–2 years of experience in public works maintenance or heavy equipment operation.
• Ability to operate a range of landfill equipment.
• Knowledge of safety policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy equipment for landfill maintenance and operations.
• Distributes and compacts refuse; covers areas with dirt; grades slopes.
• Maintains drainage ditches and access roads at landfill sites.
• Performs light building maintenance at assigned facilities.
• Directs incoming waste to proper dump area; inspects waste acceptability.
• Provides training and leadership to lower-level operators, spotters, and gate attendants.
• Cleans and maintains vehicles and equipment; performs routine repairs as needed.
• Follows county policies, safety standards and regulations.
• Completes waste load check sheets, daily logs and fuel logs.
• Attends staff and safety meetings.
