Job description

Starting salary to commence at $47,483 except in extenuating circumstances.

General Statement of Job

Collects and disposes solid waste and recyclables, both for commercial and residential accounts in the City of Venice. Repairs and maintains equipment, dumpsters, recycling containers, etc. when required.


City Expectations:

Certain essential city services are required to be maintained in any civil emergency. Depending upon the type of emergency, any and all employees may be activated as essential employees in the event of an emergency.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

1. Safely operates cutting torch, grinders, welding equipment, and utilizes any other tools/equipment related to welding (including drills, saws, and hoist) and repair of trucks (including hydraulic cylinders), equipment and all containers. Completes all assignments in an efficient and timely manner.

2. Safely and efficiently drives and operates all equipment as required.

3. Interacts with the public in a respectful, courteous, and responsible manner.

4. Achieves and maintains established route and tasks standards.

5. Assists co-workers to expedite overall operations and performs other duties and tasks before or after assigned route.

6. Cleans and washes equipment daily and performs daily vehicle inspections.

7. Receives and transmits information via radio or telephone.

8. Accurately and legibly completes and maintains work orders, records, reports, forms, and other required documentation.


9. Notifies supervisor of all accidents immediately and vehicle malfunctions/repair requirements prior to being released from duty.

10. Maintains inventory of supplies, welding equipment and tools. Ensures equipment, yard and facilities are kept in good working order.

11. Assists in maintaining Solid Waste facility and yard.

Responsibilities:

Responsible for personal safety and proper use of equipment. Responsible in work to assigned foreman or designated supervisor.


Minimum Education and Training

High school graduate or GED. Must have Florida Class “B” Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with the appropriate endorsements and free of any serious violations and welding experience

Or

Must have experience as a welder, and the ability to obtain a FL Class B CDL within 6 months

Or

Must have a FL Class B CDL, and the ability to learn to weld to required standards within 6 months with on job training and instruction.

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

Skill Requirements:

Level I (Grade 125):

Knowledge of solid waste/recycling methods, materials and techniques. Ability to work independently of direct supervision and capable of sustaining regular and predictable attendance. Ability to operate both automatic and manual shift equipment. Ability to communicate effectively; understand and follow oral and written instructions, maps, GPS, and route books. Awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the general public. Must possess a valid Florida class "B" Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with the appropriate endorsements and free of any serious violations or a have a CDL Permit with the ability to obtain a class “B” Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within six (6) months of hire date.


Advancement to Level II (Grade 127)


1. Minimum of one (1) year experience in solid waste and recycling operations.

2. Successful completion of 40 hours on-the-job training in second apparatus type.

3. Ability to successfully operate a minimum of 3 of the types of solid waste and recycling apparatus.

4. Maintain a Class B CDL free of any serious violations.

5. Maintain fully satisfactory performance appraisals.

6. Ability to weld to required standard independently


For all levels

Within six months from date of hire, to a satisfactory standard, develop the ability to safely and effectively use welding, grinding, cutting torch equipment and any related tools. Ability to fabricate and repair dumpsters, equipment parts, and other miscellaneous items.


Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop, and lift up to 40 pounds. Must have the ability to maneuver containers over 100 pounds. Physical exertion large part of job. Ability to work outside in all kinds of weather and for prolonged periods of time. Must have good eyesight and hearing with or without aides. Must possess excellent hand and eye coordination. Reasonable accommodation will be considered for individuals with physical disabilities.

Working Conditions:

Works indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions, with odor of refuse. Work may involve frequently entering and exiting vehicle. May be requested to work overtime or additional shifts as needed.
