Job summary

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is hiring a Solid Waste Engineer for the State Office in Boise. This role emphasizes evaluating solid waste facility submissions and providing engineering guidance within regulatory timeframes.

Minimum qualifications include Idaho PE licensure or eligibility, with related experience in applying federal/state laws to engineering practices, and a valid driver's license. Hybrid telecommuting may be available per policy.

Qualifications

• Licensed in Idaho as a Professional Engineer (PE) or eligible for comity licensure by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers with valid driver's license.
• Experience: evaluating and applying federal, state, and local laws in engineering contexts; strong technical writing and reporting skills.
• Ability to coordinate field work, inspections, and compliance reviews for solid waste facilities.

Responsibilities

• Conduct technical and engineering reviews of solid waste applications, plans, and facility submittals.
• Evaluate designs, hydrogeologic investigations, environmental monitoring systems and other components for compliance.
• Prepare technical review comments, conditions for approval, and necessary correspondence within regulatory time-frames.
• Participate in pre-application meetings with applicants, consultants, and facility owners.
• Assist with development and revision of engineering guidance documents, procedures, and templates.
• Provide recommendations to the Solid Waste Program Manager on non-routine or complex design matters.
• Assist facilities with questions pertaining to compliance with solid waste regulations.
• Remain current on developments in landfill engineering and related regulations.
