Civic Works’ Center for Sustainable Careers in Baltimore, MD is hiring a Solar Installer 1 to support residential solar installations and energy efficiency upgrades. You will work on-site with homeowners, follow safety protocols, and contribute to monthly installation goals under supervision.

The role emphasizes strong customer service, ability to explain technical concepts simply, and a willingness to learn industry certifications as they become eligible.

Qualifications

• Must have construction and/or mechanical experience.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Strong computer skills or ability to quickly learn web-based software such as Google Suite a plus.

Responsibilities

• Set up safety equipment, ladders, and staging areas.
• Measure, cut, and assemble structural framing, brackets, and rails.
• Secure solar panels and modules safely to roofs or mounts.
• Help run conduit and connect panels to inverters and the main electrical system.
• Perform basic site cleanup and routine system checks.
• Support workforce development by fostering a positive, inclusive learning environment.
• Perform duties and tasks as they relate to industry standards, contracts, and work orders.
• Participate in staff and team meetings. Communicate and coordinate with appropriate staff as needed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Crew Leader, Field Manager and Program Director.

Civic Works’ Energy Programs make it easy and affordable for Baltimore City and Central Maryland residents to go solar and upgrade their energy efficiency. Through our programs, residents of all income levels lower their energy bills, improve the comfort and safety of their homes, and have a positive impact on the environment. As an integral part of Civic Works’ job training center, we also play a pivotal role in expanding access to quality careers in the clean energy sector.

Civic Works launched its low-income solar installation and roofing program in 2023 to provide free services to Baltimore City homeowners. With key partners and funding in place, the program now serves more than 50 low-income households each year. Civic Works is hiring a Solar Installer 1 to support this growth.

Position Summary

The Solar Installer 1 helps complete installs safely and efficiently. The installer works directly with homeowners, so a strong customer service focus and a passion for clean energy are essential. The role works alongside crew leaders and temporary on-the-job trainees (OJT), contributes to monthly installation goals, and is evaluated on performance metrics set by the Solar Field Manager and the Solar and Roofing Construction and Training Manager. Civic Works invests in the professional growth of its installers and pays for additional industry certifications once eligibility requirements are met.

Primary Responsibilities

On Site Duties

• Set up safety equipment, ladders, and staging areas.
• Measure, cut, and assemble structural framing, brackets, and rails.
• Secure solar panels and modules safely to roofs or mounts.
• Help run conduit and connect panels to inverters and the main electrical system.
• Perform basic site cleanup and routine system checks.
• Support workforce development by fostering a positive, inclusive learning environment.

Customer Service and Engagement

• Help homeowners understand what to expect each day on site.
• Break down technical language into general terms for customers.
• Ensure customer satisfaction; respond to all questions and concerns with professionalism.
• Respond to quality control inspector questions and concerns with professionalism.
• Escalate problems to the Solar Field Manager, as needed.

Secondary Responsibilities

1. Perform duties and tasks as they relate to industry standards, contracts, and work orders.
2. Participate in staff and team meetings. Communicate and coordinate with appropriate staff as needed.
3. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Crew Leader, Field Manager and Program Director.

Qualifications: Education and Experience

• Must have construction and/or mechanical experience.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Degree, certifications, and/or completed courses comparable with the curriculum taught at Civic Works’ Center for Sustainable Careers is a plus.
• Technical solar experience, expertise, and industry knowledge is a plus.
• Experience with flat roofs is a plus.
• Experience with working in a non-profit organization is a plus.
• Strong computer skills or ability to quickly learn web-based software such as Google Suite a plus.

Skills and Abilities

• Must be well-organized with the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work independently under pressure and tight deadlines.
• Must possess strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to accept and adapt to constructive criticism.
• Must have the physical ability to perform the work. Must be able to lift 50lbs or more, work on rooftops, and perform during all types of weather conditions.
• Must be a team player, with a self-starter attitude, and a willingness to lead and initiate.
• Must have the ability to perform basic math.
• Must have the ability to use ladders, lifts and/or fire escapes, and crawlspaces to access the worksite.

Schedule and Location

Work schedule is typically Monday through Friday, with start times as early as 7am. This is an in-person position that will report to Civic Works’ office in Baltimore City and travel to solar installation locations.
