Job summary

Virginia Tech's School of Plant and Environmental Sciences seeks a Laboratory Technician to support research on the chemical and physical properties of soil and stormwater runoff. You will assist in day-to-day lab operations, prepare samples, perform analyses, calibrate equipment, and ensure compliance with EHS regulations.

You may mentor undergraduate and graduate researchers and occasionally conduct field sampling at research farms or field sites.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent laboratory experience.
Experience in a scientific research lab.
Knowledge of standard lab safety protocols and hazardous waste disposal.
Strong organizational and time-management skills with attention to detail.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel) for data entry and record keeping.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

Assist lab manager with day-to-day lab operations and maintenance.
Prepare samples and conduct routine/specialized analyses.
Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment and ensure safety compliance.
Provide training/guidance to undergraduate/graduate researchers on basic lab protocols.
Occasional fieldwork such as soil/plant sampling at research farms or field sites.
